Is this Ammonite real or fake?
Azbantium posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello everyone, First of all I must say that I’m new to buying fossils and that I know nothing about Ammonites. Recently I saw this Ammonite laying around in a small home decor shop. I immediately loved it, so I decided to purchase it. However, I’ve got a suspicion that this one is fake (or at least heavily sculpted), for the following reasons: 1. It was quite cheap. The certified ones I’ve seen on the internet (same size, same price) are much less detailed than this one. 2. It has ‘flaking’ layers and some cracks (see close up pictures) 3. It just looks a little bit too perfect compared with the ones I’ve seen on the internet. I wouldn’t really mind if it were fake, because it just looks really cool. But I’m really curious what you people think. Is this real, fake or sculpted? Thank you! -
Dino egg-real or fake?
Aaron Livingston posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello again everyone! i received the egg I purchased. I took pics outside in sunlight so hopefully some of the can “shed light” on whether this is real or faked. Again, I greatly appreciate everyone’s input. Thanks! Aaron -
This is a “pterosaurs” jaw I got as a gift a little bit ago. It was sold as a pterosaurs jaw with composite teeth the species is Siroccopteryx But Am almost 100% sure that it is wrongly identified it looks like a crocodile jaw maybe. So if someone can help me identify the jaw that would be amazing.

Dino egg-real or fake?
Aaron Livingston posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello everyone! I’m Aaron and I’m new here. I just purchased an egg online. I then started reading about how many fakes there are and now I’m very worried. Can anyone give me the skinny on whether it’s real or not? It’s coming from Malaysia and claims to have been part of a private Japanese collection prior to the 80s. I appreciate all your input, thanks! -

Hi everybody, I have been looking everywhere for a decent keichousaurus fossil for the past few months, but everything on that popular bidding site seems low quality. I came across this one and was wondering if it is legit. Thank you in advance!- 4 replies

Turtles from China...again
sneakyelf posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Manchurochelys liaoxiensis from Liaoning province. These turtles have shown up in the forum before, some with the conclusion they are real, some not. Here is an incredible display of turtles with fish! However, I am highly skeptical despite coming from a reputable source. They seem to have a halo of color all the way around them. On extreme angles there are some parts where the shell is not attached to the matrix. Even the fish are "on" the matrix, not in it. It is not resin, as I have exposed many parts to a soldering iron. The crack on that back seems to run under, not through, the turtles but is visible on the front where the turtles are not. It even runs under, not through, a limb. To me, a best case scenario is that these "real" fossils were placed onto a stone slab, but that seems like a lot of unnecessary work. If the turtles are casts that are put onto the matrix, is there an easy way to tell? Would x-ray be useful as the turtle and the matrix are likely different densities if the turtles were added on? And can anyone recognize the fish? If they are millions of years apart, that might answer the question. but where are the heads of the fish? Llastly, for a fascinating read on fakes, check this out: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/265208436_Fossil_fakes_and_their_recognition This is not the site of a seller, so it should not break the rules of this forum...if I am not mistaken. Thanks for your thoughts! -
Hi everyone. This recently came in the mail. I’m almost positive that it’s real as I bought it from a reputable dealer, but just wanted to make sure. What does everyone think?

Acetone test for paint on fossil
TeacherCollector posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello all, I started collecting fossils as a hobby a few years ago, trusting sources without question. I recently bought my first expensive fossil (Keichousaurus) online. I know they are often faked (or at least heavily restored) so I want to confirm that mine is legitimate. I did a scrape test which revealed more bone so that was good. However, I did an acetone test on a couple of the bones and the bones faded a little bit and the q tip I used picked up some dark grey/black. I also tried it on the matrix in three places which pulled up even more black on the q tip (more than the fossil had done). I was wondering if this is normal or not. Can you please help me determine if my Kiechousaurus is genuine? The picture shows one arm untouched (the top of the picture) which you can see is a bit darker than the bottom arm which has been swiped with acetone. Thanks for your help! -
Hi there! I would like to know if this megalodon tooth is real or fake. My son says it's real due to all the damage on it, but I'm not so sure. The Seller says it's 5 and a half inches long and say the bought it at an estate sale in Texas. Thanks!

Reputable dealer of Moroccan trilobites?
hemipristis posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
hafa adai, I'd really like to buy one or two of those detailed trilobites with spines, appendages and all, either Russian or Moroccan. I see prices all over the map, and have observed a few really bad fakes. I'm sure that there are also a lot of really good fakes (hence the wild price differences). Can anyone recommend a checklist/things to look for and/or a reputable dealer (preferably one that doesn't charge mortgage-level prices)? I don't want to keep bothering folks with repeated queries of Is this one good?" "How about this one?" I've read a number of posts in this form, and they tend to refer to individual specimens. I"m looking more for something that I can save to my HD and refer to while I"m shopping online. thank you in advance, hemi- 8 replies

Fake Moroccan Trilobite?
Wonderful_Life posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello, fellow fossil people! I am extremely new to the fossil scene and have almost no experience identifying authentic versus real fossils. I recently received a large trilobite fossil as a gift from my parents. The seller claimed that it was an authentic Moroccan trilobite, but I'm not so sure. Any information on the fossil's authenticity and/or identity would be greatly appreciated! -
I just noticed on one of our favorite auction sites a fellow selling fossil crabs from Java and called Lophoxanthus scaberrimus. My jaw dropped to the floor! Just another reminder to be watchful and careful what you purchase. Good luck RB

Fake Carcharodontosaurus tooth
paulyb135 posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Last year when I was still a rookie in the dinosaur tooth collecting hobby I acquired a rooted Carcharodontosaurus in a trade. I was advised shortly after receiving it by a few people that it looks pretty fake. I have only just got the time to look in to this properly and my findings astounded me! Attached is a before and after image. The root is completely fake and the crown is made up of at least two different carch teeth and then glued together and painted. I have now thrown this tooth in the bin. My advice for all collectors so they don’t make the same errors as me and others I’m sure is to get second and third opinions before buying or trading!- 24 replies

Trilobite fake or really bad preparation?
lasersaber posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi, I am new here and just starting to find and purchase fossils for my collection. Up until now, everything I have purchased appears to be legit. Today, however, I just received a fossil that is not even the same rock as shown in the original auction photos. The first thing I noticed is that the fossil was leaving black marks, almost like a pencil would, on white paper. I decided to wash it off and saw a few patches that were a completely different color of grey and looked like a glue/putty material. Restoration, maybe? This grey stuff was soft and easily scraped off with a razor blade. Later, after I had it all washed off, I compared it to the original auction photos, and I realized that this is not even the same fossil. It's too bad because now I am not able to show before and after photos of the fossil that I received, though I will show the photos from the auction listing. Original auction photos: -

I was looking around on internet then i saw this Plesiosaurus tooth for sale and i wanted to get it but i wondered if it was a actual fossil or just a fake. It was said to be found in Khouribga Phosphate Mine, Morocco, is 100 million years old (Cretaceous) and is 45 by 15 mm- 5 replies

Hi everyone, are parts of this Knightia painted? Bought from a pretty reputable dealer, not a dubious random online seller.

Seeking advice on newly purchased Keichousaurus
jasonwongzero posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi! I recently purchased the following Keichousaurus Hui. Although I have a modest fossil collection primarily consisting of Trilobites, this is my first Keichousaurus fossil. I had a chance to inspect the fossil first hand in the store before purchasing and while it looks quite nice to me, I would appreciate feedback from this group. IMHO, the piece is very attractive and presentable as a display piece (and it carried a correspondingly 'display piece' price!). I don't have any major concerns other than maybe the piece is too nice as it is nearly symmetrical, the detail is very fine, etc. Here is what I have observed: 1) The fossil is extremely 3D with well defined relief. Bones are thick, heavy, dark and well articulated. The fingers and toes in particular are very well defined. 2) The neck loop is very unique and the 'physical loop looks right' in that the bones go under and around each other in a believable way. 3) I did a very light acetone test on most bones, including the fingers and there was a bit of soil that came up. I did not see evidence of ink, nor did any of the bone detail wipe off. 4) The head is very detailed with needle like bones that might be teeth? 5) The matrix is soft and from the side is clearly layered. The back side of the matrix is flaking off and has a section that appears a little glossy... perhaps epoxy of some kind was used to shore up a weak back side? 6) There are thin cracks/striations that cross the specimen. These line up with the natural lines of the animal, so it does not appear that it is a composite. 7) There are no bubbles that I can see. 8) There appear to be a jumbled lump of bones in the gut... maybe the little guy's last meal? I have a ten day purchase guarantee from the seller and would love to keep this piece for display. Would appreciate the experts in this forum to help give me some confidence as to the quality of this piece, thank you! Jason- 27 replies
