real or fake dinosaur bone?
Compy posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
One of my first pieces I bought a couple of years ago was the one below. It came without ID and is supposed to be a part of a dinosaur bone from Morocco. It was quite inexpensive. But now after some reading about lots of 'fossils' from Morocco being fake/manipulated I got suspicious. Firstly, it was quite cheap. Secondly, it is very thick and smoothly carved out of the stone. On the other hand is the fact, that the visible bone structure with the small tunnels looks real. Has somebody seen something similar and can tell me if it is real or a fake? May be it is a real bone but not from a dinosaur that is somehow glued on a natural rock? -
Can you guys help me figure out if this Sinosaurus is genuine? It is on the ...auction site... and the seller has 4 total, they all look different from each other. I don't know enough (or anything, really) about these to determine if they're genuine or not. The description calls it a Sinohodrosaurus from a local auction, and that it has some reconstruction. I messaged the seller asking where it was collected and what the reconstructions are. I'll update if they get back to me!

I am looking into buying the fossil shown below and I was wondering if any one can tell if it’s real or fake. I am leaning more towards real, but I would enjoy some second opinions.

Commonly faked, hard to tell 100%
DevonianDigger posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
So, I found this guy on the auction site, really only this one representative photo. These are often fake or frakenfossils, but I didn't see anything that screamed fake to me in this one photo. Just wanted to put it out to the room for other people's input. It doesn't matter as I basically stole it for 9$, so even if it's fake, I don't much care. Just curious what everyone thinks. (I don't have more photos, I just bought it this morning, this is just the provided photo. I'll be able to tell if it's fake when it arrives this weekend for sure, but the suspense is just too much, lol.) Also, it's about 5" long, not that that matters. -
I was shown the photo of a juvenile Keichousaurus from the type locality in Guizhou this morning and was asked to check its authenticity. It looks real at a glance but when I look closer, it looks suspicious. I was told that this is a man-made one. Take a look.

Brittle star fossil, genuine or carved?
MarielleK posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello all. I saw this brittle star fossil up for sale, and wanted to check if it was genuine. It says it is from Morocco, and from the Ordovician period. I know a lot of sea stars and brittle stars coming out of Morocco are carved. I am not as educated on echinoderm fossils as much as others. I've included pictures. What do you all think? Thank you!- 5 replies

I have just come across some newly made fake dinosaur eggs from Ganzhou, China. Ganzhou has a large number of dinosaur eggs dug out from development sites but recently some people are producing fake eggs and sell them at a high price with real eggs from Ganzhou. Take a look of the fake eggs.

Hi everyone, I just purchased this megalodon from the fossil store I work at (they are very kind trustworthy people). It looks pretty real to me and microscope pictures look real too (I can include if needed) I wasn't skeptical until I saw how uniform the broken basal looked. I heard fakes are usually perfect but maybe this fake is broken so people would assume it wasn't a fake? Anyways, everything looks pretty nice and real and there is even a slightly visible white spot under the black on the front of the tooth (where maybe the real enamel underneath is showing.) Please, any feedback would be great.

Hi, can anyone tell me if this is real or fake? I can see there are repair work done on it (which I dont mind). I just want to know if its real. Thank you!

Hi, I will like to seek advise regard this ammoniteis it fake. As the shape and structure is something I never come across. I do not have any information where the ammonite was it found, so I post it here and hope someone ever come across it and can advise.

I work at a fossil and mineral store and they own a 3.5 - 4.0 inch megalodon tooth (the basal of the tooth is broken slightly but its still beautiful) The serrations are smooth but visible, the bourlette is defined and a darker color than the enamel. However I have my doubts about buying it. They went to a fossil show in Colorado years ago and bought it from someone at a stand (none of my employees or boss are "fossil savvy".) I'm worried about spending $ on a fake megalodon tooth. I work this Saturday and will upload photos of me holding it from the case before I decide to buy it. I saw no seams on it from a possible mold but it just seems too cheap for the size. Its color is all black, which is a good sign but those can be easily faked too. I know, nobody can determine until I post a picture, However I did want to ask if there was any specific way people use to identify if a megalodon is fake or real? I heard megalodon teeth are cold to the touch and the plastics are slightly warmer.

Is this a genuine shark tooth?
KrazyK711 posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello! This seems like a rather homey website and I've just recently shown an interest in collecting fossils. I actually happened to have purchased my first one earlier today and was hoping to have it verified to see if it's fake or not. It's relatively damaged, but still a neat looking tooth. I was told it was found off of Cape Cod, and i didn't purchase it for much (only 25$) so it's not a big loss if it happens to be a fake. I attached a few photos to view. My biggest concern is how smooth the actual tooth is. Thank you for all the help in figuring out if this is genuine!- 10 replies

Ammonite: real or fake?
LauraGalicia posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello! I'm a lover of Ammonites, in particular I adore the ones with the preserved iridescent layer of the mother of pearl. Because I don't have the knowledge and preparation of a professional, I would like to know if this specimen I recently bought is a real one or it is fake, apart from the carving/polishing work it has. Thank you so much!- 15 replies

False sellers online
pugrockprincess posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hey everyone! You were all so great when it came to helping me determine what fossils were authentic and worth spending well on. Well, I recently came across an online seller. I purchased a "jaw bone" (authentic teeth, the typical fake jaw set in sand) and noticed they are now selling many more fossils that appear to be complete casts. Is it worth reporting them or could it be that they don't know much about fossils themselves and are being conned by their suppliers? They have 100% positive feedback so I guess their customers don't know what to look for either?- 1 reply

Hi all, I recently purchased this Keichousaurus specimen off an online seller (not online) and wondered if it was genuine or not... the seller stated that there had been repair to the matrix (don’t know if that shows up in the attached images:|) The seller also said there was no repairs, painting, carving etc and that the actual fossil was 100% genuine. Inspecting it with a loupe I could see the bone matter is raised from the matrix (slightly) and that there may be teeth present on the skull, but I don’t know if they’re painted on, as that is sometimes the case. Anyway I thought I’d come here to get it checked out as I’m not very experienced with fossils and fakes yet. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated Jai.
