I recently purchased a whimsical octopus chair at a friendly local gift shop, here in my home town, and while at the shop I browsed a small display of fossils, mostly from Morocco and Madagascar. Attractive gift-shop items purchased mostly at the Tucson shows. The owner asked me for my opinion of an object she purchased as a crocodile skull. I let her know I was skeptical, but she had paid quite a bit for it and I offered to consult our esteemed members for a verdict. So here I am passing the buck to you. My photos are poor, as I just took a few quick indoor snapshots, but I think they're adequate for you to make your pronouncement. I've never seen any of these items in person before and was a little surprised to see the vertebra shape at the back of the head and I am wondering if this is common. The teeth, to me, look like those of a mosasaur, is that correct? I pasted a few photos of a known fossil skull along with an extant skull and the gift-shop skull for comparison to help my local gift-shop owner see what I'm seeing. I intend to point out that the jaw and the rest of the skull appear to be one solid piece rather than an articulated jaw, and there are no sutures or anything that really resembles bone. She did ask me, when I was at the shop, if the skull could have been badly eroded or if it just isn't prepped enough. I said I didn't think so but I'd defer to you. Thank you for your comments.

Years ago I got this as a child. It came out of a basket of common fossil shells. I thought it was a Crocodile or Alligator tooth. Now, as a more informed adult, I think it's just a vaguely tooth-shaped rock. It has no enamel to speak of. Feels like limestone. Can anyone confirm? It's maybe an inch and a half long at best.

I just bought this megalodon tooth online, and I was wondering if someone could help me out and see if it’s real. My main concern are these notches/dents on the sides of the tooth (close to the root). It kind of makes it seem like it’s been molded. I’m not sure if this is natural or not.

Hello everyone! This is my first post on the forum so forgive me if I make any mistakes today. I just bought a little trilobite today from a shop in Athens, Greece. It's my first time buying a trilobite, and so me being a noob at telling the differences between a fake and non-fake, I wanted to ask your opinion. It's a Moroccan trilobite and I don't know the specific species. It's black in color on a grey matrix, it's not too light in weight for it's size but not too heavy either, it's 3cm in length and it has holes and it depending on what species it is it doesn't seem too detailed. I did google it first btw and did see that those last two indicators are a sign of a resin fake, but I wanted to ask here too just to make sure. Sorry if the photos aren't that well focused! I'm not good with a camera! Also in the case that it's fake don't feel bad for me since it ws pretty cheap for a fossil! Thank you so much for your help!

Wanted to check that these were genuine fossils and not a scam. Fossils came with certificate of authenticity from [seller name redacted] but I know that doesn't mean much. Hello everyone, I've been trying to gather a list of fossils for a wishlist for the upcoming September show in Denver. I've been looking in the fake/real section in the forum and it's seemed to sway my confidence for picking out real vs fake fossils in person. Is there any fossils or regions where fakes are common, or that I should avoid purchasing? Thank you for any help!

Could I ask everyone’s opinion. I purchased some Amber from China. I was told it was real, but I am not sure. I tried the salt water test and it does not float with two cups of warm water and a quarter cup of salt. Another piece that was purchased from a reputable seller does float. When I add A lot more salt then it all floats. Can anyone help me? Here are some photos with and without UV light.

Was recently in AZ and went to the 22nd street fossil and gem show. Found an ammonite unlike any other I have ever seen so I decided to grab it. Just curious whether or not it's a real sample or well dressed eye candy fake. Was told it was from Morocco not Madagascar. Any thoughts?

Amber with fluorensce & pine smell, but not floating

Hi members, glad to be here, I have a collection of fossils that mainly I want to ID and see also if they are real. My topic now is for amber beads but not sure if they are real or fake. I tried the following: UV light: Fluoresce green (light green) Hot needle test; It smells sweet pine ( after few seconds, not immediately). No definitely not plastic, in Greece there are pines I know the smell. Needle does not penetrate easily the beads. BUT I tried seawater, does not float, I tried also a lot of cooking salt (with iodine) and tap drinking water very warm, (not distilled water) in a stainless metal pan bowl (I had seen in a you tube video was not recommending metal bowl,I do not know why). I have put so much salt that it does not dissolve anymore. Result: They drop., Funny they seem to float a bit before they drop to the bottom, they do not drop down like rocks. Also if rubbed (for a minute) on a sweater (cotton or wool) the bead does not create static electricity, I do not feel my hair going up when I place the bead on my head. So two white flags and two red flags. Do I have topal? (I have no idea if topal behaves differently than amber) Do I have a plastic fake that smells like pine? Or I have real amber but I do something wrong? Any help? Thank you for any possible answer. Note: the same happens for various different beads ie: creamy yellow, light brown with spangles etc. -
Hello. I bough this item from a fossil shop in France years ago. I am wondering whether it is Drotops megalomanicus and more importantly if it is a fake. I hope you can tell from the photos. Recently members Coco and JBKansas helped me identify some fake ammonites I thought were real fossils. Thank you in advance for your reply. Constantinos.

Hello everyone, I'm a novice considering an online purchase. In my corner of the world even poor quality fossils are few and far between both online and and in shops, so I haven't had much oppotunity to get a feel for what's genuine or decent quality and could use some advice. The tooth is listed as a Dromaeosaurus from the not very specific location of North africa. I'd of course prefer if the location was properly specified, but because I rarely see anything worth purchasing, I've ended up considering this tooth in spite of that. I'm wondering whether the tooth has been restored (the tip perhaps? The distal serrations?), it also seems quite shiny but that might just be the lighting. Whether the ID is correct, I know teeth from this area are generally poorly described. The tooth is 16mm long and to me the mesial serrations look smaller than the distal ones and the tooth seems to have slight ridges(?) The photos have been provided by the seller, so I apologize if the image quality is too poor to conclude anything. Thank you for reading my post

HI everybody, so i´m quite new in the fossil collecting business and started watching some auctions on an auction site, recently. My one and only fossil finding event was some years ago in the south of morocco with my wife in a jeep, where we could find trilobites easy on the side of the desert tracks. one of the locals also showed us the "production" of the 100´s of trilobites they sold as souvenirs, mostly made by casts... Well, what i´m looking for now is a selection of maybe a (or 2) handful nice objects of good size and quality, and one of this pieces should be a mosasaur skull or jaw. There are a lot offered these days at the mentioned auction site, but i´m really afraid that some of them are fake. so my question to you experts is - how can i distinguish between a real mosa and a pile of resin? and is the expert-estimation on cata something you can trust - at least that´s it a real dino and no fake one? i did a little research on this topic and will post 3 pics of proven real mosa skull/lower jaws from past auctions (the 3 with the blue background) at another site and after that 4 pics of 2 mosasaurs that are on the auction this week and, well, could be interesting for us if they are no fakes. thank you so far for your feedback and best regards, ray Auctions: # 1 # 2 REAL MOSASAUR JAWS

Attached are a few pictures of woolly mammoth teeth. Some of the pictures are real (per the seller) and some are replicas. My question is without additional information (which I think a seller could fabricate) how can you tell the real from the replica?! Thank you!
