A little luck of the Irish today. I’ve been having fun with the fishies lately. I found some of a pretty good size Xiphactinus and a large fish tooth at a separate spot. I’ll have to check back for more after the incoming rain. Late Cretaceous- Austin Group(85-88 mya) The centra are 1.75 inches, that would put the fish at around 9-10 feet according to Oceans of Kansas. The fish tooth is exactly 2 inches. ID on the tooth?

Ive always been very fond of the fossil fishy's. I also learned to aquire the little tiny fossil fishy's too. I have the little tiny phareodus and the little tiny priscacara, but today whilst going through yet more boxes of stuff, I ran into these little tiny beauties. The first, a 5/8 inch Mioplosis. 2nd, another Mioplosis measuring 3/4 inch and a very nicely preserved little 1 1/4 inch Knightia. Really made my day running into these!!! Just freakin love these!!! Life is really good!!! RB

Hey everyone, these are not my photos but ones from a listing on a popular auction site. There isn’t any info given about the fish, other than that they are a pair and weigh 35g. They look to be from the Green River Formation, but I’m not an expert so if you have a different idea, I’m all ears. My main question, however, is if anyone can identify the species? Judging by the coin size, I’m estimating that the size of the slab is about 4cm high and 6-7cm long. Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks!

I have heard of using an air abrasive for GRF fish, but haven't been able to find any pointers on how to do it. Is this a safe method of matrix removal? I have one slab I am working on now (first try on a fish) and have been thinking of getting some more 18 inch layer fish to prep if I can. I am guessing you would use bicarb versus dolomite. If you do use this method, any pointers on PSI, and overall technique, when to use, when not to use? So far I have just been very sporadically working on it with an Aro. Nathan

Looking through the sieved material I noticed this little jaw ? I has come out of the marine material I get from Richmond in central Queensland in Australia. I refer to the layer it came out of as the fish mash layer as it is full of small fish material. In the layer I find fish, shark, turtle, Ichthyosaur, pliosaur, pterosaur and bird material. The fossil is 6 mm in length and quite fragile. Thanks in advance for any input Mike D'Arcy

Hi all. First off it's a dream of mine to one day have a skull from a xiphactinus audax. I have here a xiphactinus skull, but as you can see it is heavily disarticulated. Would it be a bad or good idea to try and have this skull professionally restored?

I purchased this fish while in WI when I was still a kid back in the early Devonian, but never received an ID on it. Unfortunately it’s poorly preserved and difficult to see, but I’ll take your best guess. No idea if it originally hails from WI or not.

Im still working on getting an air dryer, but still working on fossil fishy's. Here are two Phareodus fishy's ive been working on and ive got another one but that one still has a long way to go. Ive really got too many fossil projects, but for me, thats a good thing. Keeps me busy and out of the bars. I also havent been to a bar for about 20 years. Oh, the fish in the background just needs a little bit of clean up around the jaws mostly but the bottom fish needs a lot of fin work still. Hoping the fins on that one are better than what it seems? I found this fish for sale online. There is only one picture and not a very clear one. It's simply described as rare fish. Can anybody tell me if this a fish from the Santana Formation in Brazil?

I had a seller say ALL stingray fossils are at least marginally "touched up." While other sellers say only some of them have repair. What should I believe? Is everything a lie? :0

Yesterday, I visited the American Museum of Natural History in New York with my girlfriend, benefitting from free passes she got from the local library. Spent some time in the Hall of Vertebrate Origins which is over all my favorite exhibit though the two dinosaur halls and the hall of prehistoric mammals- all on the 4th Floor are well worth visiting. Took a number of pictures of the fossil fishes for Fossildude19 and the rest of the Forum membership. Poor lighting in that section of the exhibit hall limited what I was able to take, but hope you enjoy what I could record. Fish fossil experts feel free to jump in and identify what's shown:

Hello. I was IDing some fish jaws and I'm stumped on this one. I'm thinking sphyraenus barracuda, since this jaw came from Florida. It's 3 inches exact, tooth sockets approx 3/8'' for the larger ones.

I apologize as I did not keep any information about where I found this. But I saved it as I was curious. I have showed it to some experienced natural history collectors and those interested in skulls without any success. So I am asking if anyone can help. I do not even know for sure that it is fish. But I remain curious. Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

I was told this fish nodule came from the Anti-Atlas region of Morocco, and is supposedly Cretaceous in age. Can anyone ID it?
