Hello, all! Sorry I haven’t losted in a while. I’ve been busy with college this semester. Anyways, I recently purchased a fossil poplar leaf from my local rock shop! I’m pretty excited to have it on my collection! They say that it is Cretaceous in age, but I’m not sure. Part of me thinks it’s from the Green River Formation and is Eocene in age, but part of me thinks that the leaf is indeed Cretaceous in age. My reasoning for it being Cretaceous in age is because I’ve heard of fantastic leaf fossils come out of Ellsworth County in Kansas. The Ellsworth County area is part of the Dakota Formation, I believe. My question is: What age you think this fossil is add what formation do you think it came from? I tried to take a photo of it with my phone, but the photo came out crappy and I feel that the lighting was bad. I probably take better photos later on if you guys want. I feel like I should’ve also provided a ruler or something for scale, but I’m pretty exhausted. Let me know if you need a scale for figuring out the size of the leaf fossil. Thank you all!

I am at a loss on how to verify if this is a leaf cutter ant. If it is it is far older than anything yet discovered on leaf cutter ants. Notice the square shaped leaf fragment near its face. I don't know what it might be if not the ant's prize. Science says that these insects started to cultivate fungus in the tertiary. Advice?

My youngest son goes fossil hunting without me these days and a few years ago he went to the parachute member of the Green River Formation and found some fossil leafs. He asked me the other day if I would do a prep job on a leaf he had found. I said "sure". So, he brought it over and I did some 'prep majic on it. It didn't look too good when I first took a gander at it, but I figured I could get some tips out of it and expose the stem. The more work I did on it the better it got. The bad thing was the leaf itself was not in very good preservation with the rock very discolored around the leaf making it hard to see. So, the mind got to thinkin and then I decided to do a bit of artwork around it. I have to say that was a good idea. Still have a ways to go but its coming along quite nice!!! One of those fossils where the more you do the better it gets. RB
