Should I go through the process of trying to clean up the large crystal or not? The were garnets I found in north eastern utah near Flaming Gorge. If I should clean it, what can I do to best preserve it?

I have a weird question guys... While gold panning we found garnets, not many at all (I am in New Zealand) - but I'd like to display them. We found a tiny glass perfume bottle, and I'm soaking it in all sorts of chemicals to get the smell out, but I was thinking - instead of using water, perhaps something more "antimicrobial" might be better. I run a still so I have easy access to the "heads" we call it, methanol, acetone etc, but also the ethanol. I was wondering if I instead use 100% proof or so as a liquid in the bottle would be better than water.. or is there a home available mix thats better ie bleach? Some are very bright pinks, some are deep red.. at most I have a tiny amount but the small bottle may make them look bigger... Any advice? They look so much better wet as opposed to dry.

I found this in Neenah Wisconsin. It feels like a gemstone & has flat edges here and there. It was near some Native American pottery. Is it a garnet?

I acquired some local Island minerals the other day from an old rockhound up-Island. As is typical, she couldn't tell me where each one is from other than "Vancouver Island", so I'm looking for that info (for some of them I have an idea). Also not sure what some of them are so am looking for that info as well. Garnets, possibly from a mine in the mid-Island area. I was impressed when saw some of these when I did a fossil presentation for the Parksville Rockhounds (but didn't make a note of the mine they came out of), and then lo and behold, this lady had some! I will get ahold of someone from that club to see if they can tell me where they're from. Also I'd like to know if there is a surefire method of removing that iron oxide coating that covers a lot of our local minerals.

I figure a lot of us here share the same interests, one of the things I do is collect sand samples from places I go. I have a few extras I would like to trade. These are each 3 dram vials, approximately 11mL per vial. The first is - Black Sand, Punaluʻu Beach, Big Island Hawai'i collected on a trip in 2009 - 3 available. second is - Topaz, Topaz Mountain, Millard County Utah, collected in 2011 - 2 available (I Know it's slightly larger than sand but it fit in my vials!) Third is - Garnet Sand / Purple Sand, Emerald Creek Idaho, collected in 2014 - 5 available Last one is - Volcanic sand, Amalfi Coast, Salerno, Italy collected in 2015 - 5 available (supposedly this is rock from Mt. Vesuvius that is broken down by the waves over the years.) I also have sand and rocks from the Jurassic aged Morrison Formation in Morrison, Colorado. Let me know if there is any interest for that, I can post pictures as well! I would mostly be interested in growing my sand collection, but I am open to fossil trades as well! Let me know what you have and we can work something out I'm sure! I may want a couple of sand samples for the topaz It is not easy stuff to collect or clean! Hope everyone had a safe and happy new years!!! -Blake
