A friend of mine went fishing at this location. He found an object that he wanted me to identified. To the best of my research, I have discovered that this is a possible horse tooth (3L Molar) and it is fossilized. I am guessing it could be 16 - 18 million years old. I would love to hear more from you guys on this.

Fun day on the North Sulphur River Texas. We saw some cool wildlife. Here's my finds. A nice mix of pleisosaur, mosasaur, enchodus, shark, turtle, horse, coprolite and artifacts.

It seems to me that our feral horses should be considered "Native Wildlife" like any other. Why did horses in North America go extinct?

I have been OUT this week... twice to the Peace River. It is hard to communicate how happy that makes me. Neither adventure found a large volume, but there were a couple of high quality fossils, even 2 very similar. 1st on Monday. Horse teeth form below the gum line, 1st the enamel "cap", then from looking at this one the dentine, and finally the roots. I have an enamel cap, no dentine, without the roots. This horse dies at a very young age while the tooth was forming. I'm thinking this may be mighty small for Equus, but that may be because I am fixated on pre_Equus small horses. Interesting, but then maybe the fossil gods are sending me a message. On Wednesday, I went back out to a different location and found ANOTHER very similar tooth... Once again, Enamel cap & dentine, but no roots... In this case, the tooth is used !! chewed on.. How does that happen?? I am missing something here. This is a bigger tooth, Equus but the width is still very small at 8mm. I might have to send an email to Richard Hulbert, but I am hoping that someone else has traveled this path of understanding horse teeth growth. I am going to submit and add the occlusal and root view as a reply... Jack

I have a few horse teeth I’ve found beachcombing, mostly after big storms. I have two that are really wide, I was thinking maybe it could be a camel tooth or something or maybe the other ones aren’t whole? I’ll put a few more pics below because I can only upload 4mb at a time

Hi, This was an unusual beach find in Tampa Bay, Florida. I thought it was a vertebrae of some kind so I tossed it in my bucket. When I was going through my Florida Fossil book looking at horse teeth one day, I saw a horse ankle bone that resembled my find. It's very hard, light probably because it is hollow; but doesn't appear to be mineralized. I'm not sure it is a fossil, but I also don't know how it could be modern. What is it?

Found this large bone in recycling bin. I have no idea what it came from. Approx 14"L x 5.75" diameter at mid bone x 13"at ends. I'd love your feedback. Thx!

Hello all, I found this piece of bone on IRB, Florida and it's about 1/2" x 1/2". I know it's pretty small to ID but it has some distinctive marks on it. My initial guess was a juvenile horse tooth frag, but than I saw pics of sloth that had similarities. I have photos of 6 different views. The photos are not as sharp as I would like, but the best I can get. Can you ID it? Thanks so much!

This tooth was found on a beach off the channel at South Padre Island. I am a shell and artifact hunter and have been finding fossils of late. I don't really know about fossils and have joined this group to help me learn and identify what I find. I have three fossils that I would love help with identification and I will post separately. This was the year of the Mammal for me. The antler piece was given to me by my friend Bill who ONLY keeps shark teeth-he also gave me the meg pieces in the previous post. The 2nd piece in the picture I can not id. Pictures 3-5 is this a deer tooth? 6/7 horse? 8/9 piece of mastodon tooth? 10/11 mammoth tooth piece, 12/13 looks like tooth material?, 14,15 looks to me to be ivory? mastodon or mammoth? 16/17 looks like the baleen groove for a baleen whale? I have a number of other large bone? pieces that i will post later as part 3 to try and see if identifiable as well as some interesting modern stuff. I did not post the bryozoan material I found either. Thanks for looking and any corrections, suggestions or comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello! Good evening for all my big family here in TFF ! I'm thinking of buying this fossil jaw from Hipparion. But please, I would like to ask some questions before my purchase: 01) Can this jaw fragment even be a real fossil or is it a modern horse jaw with mud and cement? 02) Is it an upper or lower jaw? 03) Anyone know what species of Hypariodon exactly belongs this jaw? 04) According to the seller (Yes, the seller is Chinese), this jaw was discovered in China ... Anyone know in which locality may have been discovered? Well, at least in my opinion, it's a good chunk of the upper jaw: I thank you all for your help! @Crazyhen

i picked these up seperately the horse tooth in italy and the corals in barbados a few years ago, i was just wondering if they are fossils or modern as as far as i know the places where i was weren't known for fossils but the look kind of like fossils

Found this jaw and I am wondering if it is modern or ice age. I did the match test and there is no smell what so ever. Found in the Arkansas river in kansas.

I got a tooth that I found in a river or creek in central Iowa. I'm not sure exactly where I found it, just that I found it in the water. I was wondering if it is a bison tooth, but I can't tell the difference between bison and cow teeth. I found a partial bison skull with the horns in a creek I go to, so it wouldn't surprise me if it is a bison. I included a picture of the front, back, and grinding surface. Thanks for any help.

I walked in tracks all day hunting but still managed a few finds. I really like the coprolite full of little fish bones and the Pleistocene horse ankle bone. I believe the little fish jaw is Saurodon.

I went on a 6 1/2 mile kayak adventure with a couple of friends on the North Sulphur River. We started off the day at 7AM by seeing 2 bald eagles and almost getting one truck stuck in the mud. We managed to get the truck out and started our adventure. As soon as I got down by the bridge I found one of my best artifacts to date and a nice piece of mastodon tooth enamel. We got a mile or so in and something made me ask my friend if he had the keys to his truck that was parked 6 1/2 miles downstream? Lol he had left them in the other truck without thinking. He went back and got his keys and the adventure begin. We saw very little footprints the entire trip. We didn't find many artifacts but I filled up a 1 gallon ziplock with mosasaur bones and other random fossils. One of my friends found his first shark vert, mosasaur vert and point so he was really excited. I gave my new hunter friend all my lower quality items and didn't bother taking pics of them. The water was low in some places so we had to drag the kayaks a lot but it was fun. We were finding so much stuff that we realized we would never make it the other vehicle before night if we did not quit hunting and paddle. It was so hard passing by untouched bars lol. We managed to make it back to the bridge by 7PM which was 12 hours later. Getting the kayaks up the steep bridge at the second location took all 3 men and a long rope. I got home at 9:30 PM. I'm sore but found some great fossils and artifacts. My phone died early in the trip so I missed out on some great pics. For some reason I can only post a few pics at a time since the latest update.

Hey everyone! My girlfriend Ashley and I got out to hunt some Pleistocene sites a couple days ago. There are also Eocene sharks teeth mixed in. The rivers are all pretty high, so we went to some bank hunting sites I have found over the years. They definitely did not disappoint! We found a Tapir jaw section, horse tooth, some pretty big alligator teeth, and a variety of other fossils!

I know very little on Pleistocene fossils but I always thought the horses that roamed during the Ice Age were much smaller than the modern ones. I found this large solid rock horse cannon bone fossil at the North Sulphur River Texas which is comparable in size to the modern day ones I find. I'm 100 % sure it's a fossil. Sorry I can't take measurements but I'm offshore working. Lol you can use my 6 yr old grandson for scale.

I haven't had much time to hunt lately but I did manage to squeeze in a North Sulphur River creek hunt. My finds were not great but I did manage to find a nice variety. The fossil horse cannon bone is probably my favorite due to the preservation. It's solid rock. Lol my grandson carried it around the house all night when I brought it home. The Xiphactinus vert, old bottles and artifacts were a nice bonus to the usual Mosasaur material. This creek has some killer flint in it so I can see a nice arrowhead coming soon.
