Hey there! We live in North FL and travel to Venice several times a year to visit family. I spend a good majority of my time in Venice hanging out at the beach with my kids, hunting for teeth and other fossils. We have such a good time and I would love to find some spots where I can take them to hunt for fossils closer to home. Anybody here have any suggestions? Preferably near the big bend area. Thanks!

Hello everyone, I’m off to Malta next week and am wondering wether or not it’s legal to fossil hunt there. I’ve seen several sources saying it is but I’ve also seen many people come back from Malta with many finds. Have any rules changed or is it just exportation that’s illegal. thanks in advance.

Hi guys, Its been a stressful year and it's nice to have something to look forward too right? I'd like to start dreaming about an overseas trip to hunt for fossils and I'd like to collect something that is very hard to come by in New Zealand and Australia: Megateeth! I'd be happy with any teeth in the meg lineage. I'm a fan of auriculatus, angustidens, chubutensis and megalodon. They can be found here, but there are no sites where they could be called common. I hunted for many years in New Zealand and I have found one complete angustidens and a few fragments. So I wonder if I was flying from Australia or New Zealand, where would be the best sites to hunt? I guess if I am flying all that way I could visit a few sites and make a trip of it! I don't have a dive certificate, I wouldn't rule it out, but if there are land sites or beach sites then I'd be happy with that too. I know there are guided hunts for diving, but what about land sites? Shark tooth Hill would be on my list and easy to fly to from Australia, but I think megs are rare there. Really appreciate your time if you can respond to this thread When, I'm saying when this happens, I will of course post a follow up about my trip on here!

Me and @DanJeavs recently had a trip to Wrens nest in Dudley, England. It's Alot older than what we're used to collecting and my first time collecting inland.

Yesterday I went on a little fossil hunting trip with former Forum member Kim Texan. She had stopped by on her way to Oshkosh, WI. I decided that it would be better to have a successful trip at finding fossils, so I took her to a Pennsylvanian roadcut that exposes the LaSalle Limestone / Bond Formation. It never fails to yield fossils. While collecting, a car stopped by and a reporter and photographer from the LaSalle Tribune stepped out and asked if they could take some pictures and ask some questions. Here are some pictures that I took of Kim, the area and a couple of our finds - I did find the article in the Newspaper today, along with a couple pictures that I ended up buying. No interview would not be complete without mentioning the Fossil Forum. Here is the article below: "With hammers swinging and chisels chipping, fossils were being uncovered along the roadside of County Highway 62. Just down the hill from Illinois Valley Community College, two out-of-towners were digging their way into limestone in search of different types of specimen. “It’s like a fishing hole. Nobody wants to tell you where they’re finding them,” said Ralph ******** of Aurora, who hunts for different fossils around the area. Ralph said he, unlike some others, tries to let other people know about good spots to search in on The Fossil Forum. It’s how he came into contact with Kim ****** who is from Dallas and was on her way up to Oshkosh, Wis., before stopping in the area to hunt with Ralph. “That’s one nice thing with the forum is you meet a lot of people,” Ralph said. And after 25 minutes of looking, the pair had found a few different items such as brachiopods from the Pennsylvanian period. Ralph said what they were uncovering was from about 310 million years ago. “You find shark teeth here too,” he said. Ralph said he found Peripristis teeth and confirmed it with a paleontologist with a local connection. Stephen Brusatte, now a chancellor’s fellow at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, was born in Ottawa and is an Ottawa High School graduate. “I sent him a picture to see if he could confirm what it was,” Ralph said, adding Brusatte got back to him quickly with a confirmation." Hello everyone both old timers and newcomers. I’ve been off this site a couple years due to various life challenges including the passing of my beloved wife this month. She was a great support of my fossil passion and would want me to get back into it. I’ve got somethings to straighten out here on my East Texas farm but I do plan on digging a week in late September in Millard county Utah. Cowboy pass is one of my favorite places and I know a few of its secrets so I can’t wait to dig for ammos plus a day or two with my friends at U-Dig and a stop for snow flake obsidian. I miss my friends from here and look forward to getting reacquainted and making some new friends John

This will be my first trip to North Carolina and am looking for suggestions and tips. I'm staying in Deep Gap (think that's the name), but totally open for driving a few hours to find some good spots. Hoping to find shark teeth and anything else i can. If anyone has any suggestions about places to go please let me know. I have a week there and want to make the most of it.

Hi all, I'm going to be in DC for 2 months this summer. Does anybody have any recommendations for collecting localities in the area? I'll be kinda limited in terms of where I can go bc I wont have a car.

This year's second hunt was successful, considering the snow. There is still a bit of snow covering some places. I was still lucky enough to find some ok fossils. The area where I found these trilobites is called fossildalen/fossilvalley in slemmestad (i`ve showed pictured from the area before). The fossils here in the area stem from the time periods of Cambrian, Ordovician and Silurian, a period of 541 million to 419 million years ago. At that time, Slemmestad was a seabed in a relatively shallow sea. The trilobites fossils I found are about 420 million years old I believe. I found around 10 trilobites or parts of them.

Hey everyone, what are the standard tools for fossil hunting? I'm guessing a hammer and chisel. Are there any preferred brands? How about videos for teaching newbies how to use this stuff? Best, Chris

this year's first hunt was not entirely successful. There is still a meter of snow in some places. Found some small fossils that I don't think are possible to identify. I may show pictures of them, but saw several large orthoceras and some trilobites in a mountain wall where the snow was melted (exposed to the sun). May have to wait a few weeks, after Easter before i can go fossilhunting. The area where i took these pictures is called fossildalen/fossilvalley in slemmestad. This spring break (March 17th-23rd) my girlfriend and I are planning a trip in Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado. It looks like most of the big dig sites are closed for the season, which was a disappointment for us to see. The tentative plan was to go through Kemmerer from Salt Lake (home,) and hit the digs sites there, go through Vernal to the Quarry and the Prehistoric Museum there, then to Dinosaur National Monument in Colorado with a possibility of hitting Price Utah and the Cleveland Lloyd Quarry on the way back. Without any of the digs open, it seems like we're just trying to find simple things to kill our time, but we'd rather be out doing more engaging fossil hunting or learning. Does anyone have recommendations for areas somewhere nearby where our travels will take us? Any suggestions for digs, museums, cool fossil shops, or even just pretty places to camp are all welcome and greatly appreciated!

We will be doing any family vacation trip for couple weeks to Sebago Lake in Maine. Are there any forum members that live near there if you give me any tips on locations and types of fossils that can be found Near Cumberland county? I am introducing my kids to the fun of fossil hunting and would like to make that part of our vacation. We're planing to also stop at Penn Dixie in New York on the way up to Maine. Thank you

places to hunt for shark teeth near Deland Florida?

I will be going to Deland Florida in a couple of weeks. Never been there before, just going for a quick 3 day trip to introduce my grandmother to her new great grandson. I'm hoping to be able to sneak out quick to look for some shark teeth while I`m down there. Looking for suggestions of where I can find shark teeth in that area... Thanks! -
Hi All, So haven't done any exploring or hunting since a brief weekend spent in Hastings in September last year (had a few small finds which are still waiting to be sorted) This is due to me being diagnosed and dealing with a genetic disorder which has mostly put me on my backside and I've been seriously lacking in learning more and actually getting out there on hunts. To cut a long story short, I'm feeling more myself and the flames as been reignited and I'd like to try to get back out there. I'm currently eyeing up Eastbourne and Beachy Head via Cow Gap. i was just wondering if anyone could give me some pointers on the location, I've already set about keeping an eye on the tide times as from what I've read it can be a it of a git of a location for getting cut off. looking at going the second weekend in February so will also keep a check on the weather. Any help is greatly appreciated Many Thanks The Complete Noob

I'm new to the site and was excited to find a resource such as this online. I am a collector of Native American artifacts as well as fossils, have been my whole life off and on when time allows. I just relocated (only by 20 miles) and was wondering if there are any other fossil hounds from my neck of the woods (Perry, Ste. Genevieve county, MO). I'm looking for some public areas to do a little looking if anyone has any tips. Thanks!

Hi everyone, I am from Washington State. I am a mother of an 8 years boy who love nature and fossils. He started collecting fossils 2 years ago but mostly to popular pay to dig sites. I am recently searching for fossils location near home so we can go more often and find better quality fossils. Our first trip is to Murdock Beach, WA which doesn't give us much. We are looking to learn from everyone here and hopefully can go with someone on fossil hunt trip in WA. Owl Eyes is the name my son give his museum. Below is a picture of his current collection.

Hey guys, my 6 year old son is incredibly into dinosaurs, other prehistoric animals, and, more recently, megalodon. He's said, for about the past 6 months, that he wants to be a paleontologist when he gets older. I'd like to continue to foster his love of science, biology, and paleontology by taking him on some fossil hunting trips and digs up and down the east coast. However, I have no idea where to begin. Any recommendations on some great places to go within about 5 hours of Richmond, Va? Also are there any places in the US where you can actually go and dig, find, and potentially keep legitimate dinosaur fossils or are all of those sites closed and/or you are unable to keep. Thank you

Hi, I have an 8yr old daughter who is nuts about fossils and dinosaurs. After several years of thinking she will grow out of it I've come to the conclusion I need to help her develop her love of all things dinosaur and take her of a few fossil hunting trips. Problem is, I have no idea where to go or what to look for. Any help to get us started would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hello all! Have to go to Albuquerque, NM next month. Will be driving back with a U-Haul. I want to fill as much of this truck with fossils as humanly possible to make this foolishly long drive worth the effort. Does anyone know any spots in the very-near vicinity of Albuquerque where I can collect? I'm not going to be picky about what I collect, I just want to make the most of the fact that I have to be there! Thanks in advance!

A month later and some more megs after several more trips. Not as good as our first few trips out but our collection is growing. I think the best find was the big gator tooth toward top right. We’ll be headed out ASAP for,hopefully, some more success
