Marine reptile skeleton real?
Erbenochile posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello everyone, I found this at an antique shop and was wondering if it is real. There is very little info but to me it looks like it’s from China. The owner said it is from an old collection. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! -

Toast123 posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
It was collected from Bou Dib Formation near Mrakib. Im wondering if they are authentic or fake. Why is the stone they’re on a different color than the rest of the rock?- 10 replies

This is normally not the type of thing I'd consider as it's not up the same alley of things I normally collect (dinosaur) but I came across it on a not so known site so I'm curious if it's real as I just don't have an eye for these. Color is relatively uniform which is throwing me off quite a bit as normally these are painted from what I've seen here.

Unknown Skull, gives me uncertain vibes...
Katy2319 posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Third and final fossil I was asked to identify which totally stumped me. It honestly gives me weird vibes, and I know that's not scientific at all, but I just couldn't make myself stop wondering if it was a fake. The teeth are certainly real I think, but the texture and appearance of the skull itself just seemed too smooth. Maybe it was lacquered though, as some other specimens in the collection were, and it does have a similar appearance in that regard. there are many fragments clearly held together by glue, and a white sedimentary material within the jaws/cavity. It appears to have a seam running the length of the skull across the top which leads to a sort of ridge, which reminds me of what I've seen on rhinoceros skulls in my other research projects earlier today. Almost 6" tall from lowest point of the jaw to top of the ridge. Nearly 8" long, from farthest point of snout back of skull. 3-4" wide, so certainly very narrow, but fossils do get squashed sometimes, so I'm not certain how helpful that measurement really is.- 7 replies

My husband went to an estate sale and came home with this "dinosaur tooth." The estate sale company didn't know anything about it, or where it came from. I'm not even sure it's real. Thoughts? Neither of us know much about this stuff, so thank you in advance for any insight!

Burmese amber compound leaf
Earendil posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello everyone, saw this Burmese Amber leaf for sale and it looked a bit too good to be true. I usually buy Baltic so I'm not familiar with who's reputable and not in the Burmese world. Dimensions are 31/14/6.9 mm and it weighs 1.87g. Is the whitish strip running down the side all natural or is it glue? Do you guys think it looks legit? Thanks! -
1/3rd Saltasaurus Egg
Billy LoBue posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
I recently purchased a 1/3rd opened Saltasaurus egg from online. [prices redacted] It looks pretty good.. read one of the pinned posts, it has pores. No separated cracks to compare pore alignment with though. If anyone can provide some insights, that's greatly appreciated. I'll post pictures below. Best regards and happy holidays!- 20 replies

Hi everyone, I am currently thinking about buying this Psittacosaurus femur, as it would be a nice and a bit of a rarer addition to my dinosaur collection. The piece is said to have been found in the Yixian Formation, Liaoning Province, China and it measures 14,5 cm And while it looks like a genuine and okay bone to me (with perhaps some composite elements like the little protruding part which is typical of Psittacosaurs) I am not really an expert on Chinese dinosaur fossils. The bone looks like the femur on the replica skeleton I own, but I am not 100 % sure whether this is actually the real deal or not. And if it is real, if it does belong to Psittacosaur or just another animal? @Troodon & @LordTrilobite what are your opinions on the bone?

Is this Trilobite Metacanthina real?
Mightytrex posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi everyone! New to the forum. I went to the Smithsonian Natural History Museum last summer and purchased this Trilobite in their giftshop. I just realized it may be a fake. Looking at it closer I think I may be correct... can someone please help me out to see if it is real or fake. I would really appreciate it. Being the Smithsonian I thought it would be real. I saw no information tags saying it was not real so Im not sure. Thanks!- 12 replies

Hi! I found this rad fish at a local sale, but the seller has no information on it. Is it authentic? They had some semi-suspicious specimens on the table, but this looks real to me. Any thoughts? Thanks!

The collective experience of The Fossil Forum's membership is vast, and we take the opportunity here to help those with less experience avoid some of the pitfalls faced when purchasing fossils (particularly on-line purchases). We cannot appraise or otherwise assess the $ value of a specimen, but maybe we can help keep those seeking guidance from making an uninformed mistake. We solicit for tips on distinguishing the genuine from the non, and encourage inquiry about specific specimens when certainty is elusive. For this to work as intended, we set forth the following special guidelines for posting in the Is it Real? How To Recognize Fossil Fabrications forum: >Please present and discuss examples in a way that is helpful to others seeking such guidance. >Please do not post prices or reference them in any way. >Images which illustrate possible fabrications, composites, enhancements, and mis-identifications should be attached directly to your post; links (too often ephemeral) are not permitted. >Do not post links to websites, nor identify a seller in any way. For our educational purposes, the sellers' identity is immaterial; this is all about the specimens. Do not copy or screenshot advertisement verbiage. >Discussions about posted examples should focus on their features as compared to known-to-be-genuine specimens. >Please do not make disparaging comments about any person, company, or group, or country, ... no matter how strongly you feel; this archive is for public education about fossils, and The Fossil Forum is in no position to make a case against charges of libel! Thank you for your adherence to these guidelines; we recognize that the topic of "fake fossils" pushes all our buttons as fossil collectors, but facts, not emotions, will serve our educational mission best!

What do you guys think of this Mesosaur? Authentic? Not the best quality but I haven't run across too many of these lately...figure I can always trade up for a better one in the future. The listing says the slab is repaired from five pieces and the back is coated in plaster for stability. Size is 11" x 25".
