My partner gave me this Fossil that he found as a child behind his home in Allegany NY in a creek in the early 1990's. No idea what it is or if it is even real.

Hi all, my good friend @Nautiloidand I have been doing some collecting at a site in the Trenton Group recently and we have been finding what we believe to be Gravicalymene magnotuberculata. The matrix is soft and quite easy to prep, which was a nice surprise. This one was found by my father @Penguin Fiasco Here it was before preparation Bonus headless Triarthrus Beckie appears! All done, now time to clean off the abrasive powder! Here it is after preparation, I am pretty happy with the result. Please excuse the Dolomite on my fingers, I took the plate outside to photograph as soon as I finished prep. Closeup of the Triarthrus beckii body For my first time prepping this material I don’t think I did too bad! There are of course some spots that could use more preps but I really worry about going too far and accidentally burning the shell, so I figure I’ll quit while I’m ahead on this piece.

Hi all, I found what I presume to be an Isotelus in the Trenton Group of NY yesterday. I posted the trilobite online and someone was saying that it is not an Isotelus based on how the trilobite looks Micropygous, and that they think it is a Proetid (even though the cephalon looks like an Isotelus’?) The trilobite I found looks to be in the Meraspis stage. Can anyone help clarify if this is an Isotelus, or what it could be if it isn’t? Uncovered this artifact while clearing stumps from one of the hillside in my back yard. The site is close to Long Island Sound but is +/- 150' above sea level. The artifact seems to resemble the head of a serpent or an aquatic animal. The photos illustrate what might be an eye socket, the crown of a head, a small fang and a nostril. Would appreciate any and all comments that might help identify the item.

Hey all, new here so sorry if this isn’t the way to do this…is anyone able to help identify what animal this may have come from. It was found on a small portion of beach below a cliff with a lot of erosion in WNY south of Buffalo. Not sure if it came from soil or lake…either way it seems on the heavier side and I’m thinking it might be a phalange from a deer figured I’d see if anyone could help confirm or come up with a different ID

Went collecting the Upper Devonian of New York with Paula
mikeymig posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
Paula (Seneca20) found this complete and near perfect Ammonoid (Manticoceras) during our hike/fossil hunt on Sunday 8/21/2022. She goes "oh hey, there's this thing" It was the find of the day, of course I'm not sure if I should clean it up or leave as is. I think it looks kinda cool half buried in a nodule. The shell of the cephalopod is in great condition. Something that rarely happens in this formation. Good job Paula!

Hello everyone, This weekend on Sunday my family and I made a short trip out to Central NY to do some fossil hunting. I was planning on doing this on my actual birthday which was on Monday but due to the weather we decided to do it earlier. As a result the trip ended up being more spontaneous, shorter than expected but still very enjoyable. The first stop was DSR, this was my second time at the quarry and although I didn't get as diverse of a selection of fossils this time (probably just being more picky), I got some nice specimens of a few new species as well as ones I already had. Here are some highlights: It was a great day for Spinocyrtia granulosa, lots of specimens, a number of complete ones. I especially like two of these This one is complete with very nice preservation and it's quite large. This one is the largest specimen I've seen. It's only one valve but in width from the wing tip to the end it measures right around 7cm, had it also had the other wing tip it would probably reach around 8cm. It also has some kind of borings around the commissure, I assume these occured after the animal died and the shell disarticulated, although I am not sure what kind of organism this comes from. I really love specimens like this as they tell such an interesting story of this long gone environment. Found a few nice Athyris spiriferoides, I really love these brachiopods and was excited about that. They were quite common this time but for some reason last trip I didn't collect a single one. A pretty nice, complete Mediospirifer auduculus This specimen I was very excited to find, I am not 100% sure but I think it might be Eoschuchertella arctostriata? Very beautiful in my opinion this is only an impression but I don't have any other specimens so I thought it was worth keeping. I believe this is Hyolithes striatus? Found a number of nice bivalves This slab has an Athyris and two bivalves, Pholadella radiata I believe Doesn't show up to well in the photo but this was a pretty nice Retispira leda I found I think this is Pleurodictyum americanum? Corals seem to be pretty uncommon here, and I don't have any Pleurodictyum in my collection so I was excited about this one. This last specimen for today left me confused, I found it exposed on the surface in pretty much the same condition it's in now. What confuses me is that the form of preservation looks very much like that seen in many lingulids, shiny black shell material. And the growth patterns also could fit that, but I've never seen any of this size or shape from DSR, so I was wondering if maybe it's some kind of bivalve, I'm really not sure with this one. I'll likely split this off into a different ID post with some other stuff later. I'm still sorting through and photographing the finds so I'll definitely update this topic more.

I just finished cleaning this Heliophyllum confluens (Colonial Rugose Coral) Middle Devonian, Hamilton Group, Jaycox Member. Western New York. 6" x 4" x 4.5" and its covered in epibionts. Most I know - 1. Brachiopod (Petrocrania hamiltoniae) 2. Bryozoa (Lichenalia stellata) 3. Crinoid Holdfast 4. Bryozoa? Coral?_________? 5. Coral (Pleurodictyum) 6. Crinoid Holdfast? Bryozoa (Fenestrate) Holdfast? Any help with numbers 4. and 6. is appreciated.

*AN EXPERT IS NEEDED* Devonian Vertebrate Skull from New York State

I found this Upper Devonian nodule containing bones years ago. Of course I don't find too many Devonian vertebrate fossils here in NY so I squirreled it away to get it properly prepared and IDed someday. After doing some recent rearranging of my collection, I decided to bring this fossil out into the light. What I know - #1. Its a vertebrate fossil for sure and it looks to me to be cranium elements. #2. The size is 5.5" x 5.5". #3. It was found in the Cashaqua shale nodule layer. I also find straight and coiled shelled cephalopods, wood, and tiny bivalves in this unit. My question is - Do you think Fish? Placoderm? Tetrapod? Any information will be appreciated and what species it is would be a huge help. You can magnify the pics but if you need additional photos/angles let me know. Thank You, Mikey
