Look ma, no prep work! This clam shell may look like it is just resting on a rock, but it was once inside it. Constant winds on the beach at Cape Hatteras, NC, sand-blasted the matrix to expose this beautifully colorful Mercenaria sp.-

It's hard to say just how much of the shells littering the beach at Cape Hatteras are really modern. These few are embedded in sandstone that makes up the Pleistocene shelf holding up the barrier islands. Their colors are more vibrant than some of the shells from animals that just died, and they are the same species, by and large, that live in the water here today.-

Anyone have any good recommendations on a good coastal spot that produces decent teeth around OBX,NC to Surry County? I'm not looking for your secret spot, but a general area that has a decent chance to produce a few nice teeth over a day of fossil hunting. GMR was what I was originally planning, but the Tar River level is probably going to push flood stages over the next several hours. My kids are pretty anxious and I don't want to disappoint. Any help would be great.
