When faced with a radiodont appendage fossil; How does one effectively determine which slab contains the "part" or "counterpart" ? For reference, here's the holotype Pseudoangustidontus appendage. The first pic, Figure A, is apparently the positive(?) "part" of the fossil. Whilst the second pic, Figure C, is apparently the negative(?) "counterpart". Like it's easy to tell the difference between an impression/cast, or the actual fossilised remains for hard-bodied specimens like shells, exoskeletons and bone. But for some soft-bodied organisms, it's especially difficult when both slabs seem to preserve both the impressions and the fossilised remains of the organism, as in the case with the Pseudoangustidontus holotype. I've also heard that concavity of the matrix usually helps in identification; but thin and soft-bodied specimens often just leaves a planar imprint, so judging by relief might not be too reliable either. Any thoughts on this matter?

Location is in Missouri The area is dated to the Pennsylvanian Formation: Muncie Creek Shale I assume this could be some part of a fish, as I have found other parts of them inside a few of the concretions from the Muncie Creek formation such as cartilage, or it could be some sort of crustacean part but I do not know what this one could be.

Hello Sorry to say but i dont have experience in fossiles. Anyone able to identify these have all my thanks. I live in a mining town in Serbia. I was hiking and i stumbled upon a strange stone. It was the bottom one. I took a look around soon i found two more, the one above it and the one to the right. Those 3 pieces were the outer layer that fell of from the one on the left. The one on the top is different from all. Not far from there i found two more. The left one On this picture it reminds me of a big pepper cut in half since it has that coloring all the way around but inner. The structure is similar to the left one on the previous picture. The right one On this picture on the top there is a hole like change of materia. On the other two picture there can be seen some lines on it.

What part of the stream should I look for in order to find the most fossils?
Fossilian posted a topic in Questions & Answers
Hello, I am going fossil hunting in a stream called Big Brook in NJ. It's mostly a stream ankle high. So I was wondering where should I dig and sift to find the most fossils? Should I dig deep? Should I go where all the rocks are? Should I dig on land? Thanks. -
anything here? size 5cm, material smooth limestone like, at 1st glance resembles a leaf, but it is too thick for that. also not sure if its two sides are related, but it feels like two sides of something opened.
