While rockhounding in the area of the Niagara Penninsula, I found an odd-shaped piece of metal about 5 inches beneath very thick, wet mud. The place in which I found the object was in a very shallow stream, which ran over sedimentary rock of the pre-Cambrian shield. After a closer inspection at home, I believe I may have found an iron-mineralized piece of a petrified wood, intertwined with two separate vines. A friend suggested it may be a rusty drill bit although I have doubts based on the location it was found. It is 3 1/2" long and 3/4" wide. It is heavy and seems hard like a metal. It is somewhat magnetic. It appears mostly brown, with spots of orange, and some light brown mud residue. I am assuming the vibrant orange colour is rust although there are also pale-orange spots which resemble the interior of a stick. Before cleaning the specimen, I would appreciate any opinions/advice. I am only able to attach two photos, but I will upload the rest in the response section. Any help is much appreciated!

Please give me any info you can on this. This is the most beautiful piece of petrified wood I have ever found. Any idea on age or type of wood etc.? Is the white outer covering volcanic ash? Top

I was hiking in the smoky mountains in NC near Maggie valley when I came across this, what I thought to be a petrified mushroom. It seems to be pretty since I very rarely see mushrooms up in the Smokies

Hello everyone! I have no experience with fossils whatsoever, but this looks like a fossil to me. It is very heavy and feels like a petrified bone / cartilage or shell of some kind. Very peculiar. What is it? I bought it in a second hand shop in Sweden. Thank you in advance!

I work in the coal mine in South western pa. Northern wv. I find petrified wood mostly fern tree piece but can't find much about them online. I also find what I think is pyrite.I know that they are mostly fern. They are out of the Pittsburgh seam and are around 330 million years old. Any other info would be appreciated.

Well hello everyone it’s been a while for me as it’s been a rough couple of months Traveling to be with my late Sister who battled to the end with Pancreatic Cancer. So I crossed off three of her bucket list adventures she wanted to do in our return trip to Texas. She wanted to find a Sharks Tooth, a snail ( Gastropoda) and dig for Crystals. Well as as I said we just got back from a two week stay on the west coast and the weather was not very good to us. But our first stop we had arranged to dig for Petrified Wood on the Dobell Ranch. Well when we got their to our surprise nobody was around and everything was closed up. So I called to ask what happened and the owner was very sorry as the Tucson Fossil and Minerals Show was in action and she had to delivery a tree they dugout a week ago and forgot about us. Well long story short she said no worries just go and start looking!!! So guess what we did!! i was looking for smaller pieces for my jewelry making and I found about 25 pounds of nice material. I also found some Rainbow petrified wood which made the trip worth it!! Pictures to follow as I have to crop them and cleanup the pictures to fit and download

This was found in SW Washington, Pacific County. Looks like a petrified mushroom from reference books but have not come across this one in particular.

Found in my driveway in Annandale, VA. It actually looks a little like wood but is hard like rock. I'm not getting excited but a rockhound friend suggested i run it by you-all. Let me know your thoughts.

Good evening to everyone, I am really very new to fossils and petrified items so I am at a loss as to what I may have and I need your help. My grandfather left me this piece when he passed away a few months ago and it was marked "Petrified Mushroom". I have included some photos for your review and if you have any questions please let me know. The mushroom, for lack of a better word, is about 22" long by 14" deep by about 3/8" in height. It weighs just about 74 grams and has a spot in the middle that looks like wood, it looks like it was cut or removed from a piece of wood maybe a tree. Any help anyone could provide would be extremely appreciated. If this is the wrong forum to ask about my item I deeply apologize, just let me know and I will remove the post right away. First, I want to say I don't look into fossils/teeth all that much so this may sound kind of dumb, idk. I found this while looking for shells during my first trip to the ocean last month. It looks like a hollowed out tooth to me but it doesn't look like any shark tooth I can find on Google so I don't think it's that kind. The thought had crossed my mind and was also suggested by someone else that it might possibly be petrified wood, but I'm really not very sure on that either. I just wanted to see if anyone might be able to tell me what it actually is? I hope these images are clear enough. Sorry, my camera isn't the best.
