I primarily want to know whether this fossil is authentic, but if a person could verify whether this is an afrovenator tooth is also appreciated. These are the best quality photos I have. Origin is stated to be Niger, Jurassic period. I am trying to buy my first fossil.- 4 replies

Ammonite - real or fake?
CuentoDeHadas posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello again helpful people! I am back requesting any information people can tell me about this ammonite I bought? I didn't previously have any suspicions about it being fake (and don't really understand how the pattern in the stone would be faked). However, I have since bought a trilobite from the same source (that you may have seen in my previous post) that did turn out to be fake and that I will be returning. I still have the option to return this one as well if it is fake so appreciate any feedback! -
Giant Cambrian trilobite - real or fake?
CuentoDeHadas posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
I just bought this giant Cambrian trilobite fossil from a consignment shop that specializes more in carpets than in fossils. I am a beginner at fossils and didn't realize until after purchasing that this type of fossil is very frequently faked. Does any part of this look real to you all or does it look like a composite/ cast? I am particularly suspicious of the bottom left portion which looks carved to me, but again my knowledge is very limited so I am open to the possibility it is entirely fake. I did shine a UV light on it but am not exactly sure what I am supposed to be looking for there? Also, I am not sure if this is relevant but it has a strong rusty smell to it. If it is fake, I will reach out to my friends at the shop and see what my options are; I am one of their favorite customers haha as I have purchased a lot of high-ticket carpets from them, so I feel confident they will make me whole in one way or another. -

I'm curious about what I believe are charybdis fossils from Indonesia. I'm slightly suspicious of the matrix, but also know that most of these fossils are in clay and could dry like that. Any feedback is appreciated! Thank you and have a good day.

Not another keichousaurus - sorry but need help
fossil_fun posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello! Sorry to add another keichousaurus to the forum but I was hoping to get some help. I've always wanted one of these but have never done it because I am worried it might be fake. So, if anyone could provide input, I would be super grateful. I looked at the things to look for both in reals and fakes and nothing really stood out to me about either being real or fake. I am okay with slight restoration but would like it to be as authentic as possible of course. I cropped the picture to respect the identity of the collector and dealer but some of you may have seen this, haha. Thanks in advance forum!- 7 replies

Is this Basilosaurus Jaw real?
CFerraioli posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Considering purchasing this item, and the seller had mentioned there were some reconstructions that would naturally have to be done, the question is how likely is it authentic? I find myself not very trustworthy of fossils from Morocco.- 6 replies

Real Struthiomimus foot ?
Brevicollis posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello, I saw this Struthiomimus foot on auction today, and wanted to ask If theres some restorations on it. The description says that its real and from one specimen. It looks very real to me, but i'm not sure, because of the irregular number of the toe bones. Maybe some of them are missing. But i'm not an expert, maybe someone knows it better. It was found in the two medicine formation, Montana. Its about 24cm or 8 Inch in length. -

Is my grandparent's keichousaurus authentic?
Rh_4m posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
My grandma says she must've gotten them somewhere around 40 years ago, and though she dpesnt remember where exactly she got it, she did say that she's travelled all over Asia, including China, througout her life (in fact, she even lived there in the 90s). Also, I was curious if there was any ways to preserve the fossil; it's kinda been kept out in the open it's whole life and I was wondering if there was any ways it could be displayed, like idk framed, in such a way that it gets protected from future damages? Thanks in advance- 7 replies

I recently came across a "Dolichorhynchops" tooth listed for sale by a US seller. However, I am unable to personally verify its identity due to my limited knowledge of polycotylid teeth. Based on the provided pictures, the tooth fossil exhibits a strong curvature and appears to have ornamentation solely on its lingual surface. Do these characteristics suggest that it belongs to Dolichorhynchops?

Possible Eggs from Hunan Province
JJ Lavoie posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
So these possible eggs (rocks) were acquired from a chinese dealer back in the 70's and somehow came to a local shop to me where they knew nothing about authenticating them. The information I was told is they are from the Hunan Province in China. They were told to have been placed in the matrix base. Measurements: Egg 1- 4"x4" Egg 2- 4"x4" Egg 3- 4.5"x4.5" I even got them CT scanned which you can see the kinda blurry results but i'm curious... Are they real?... If so what kind?- 23 replies

Hi there, I have just found stored away these two fosils that I bought as a youngster many moons ago and am hoping you may be able to help me identify thier authenticity or otherwise and perhaps ID them also. I assume the fish either is or is supposed to be from the green river formation, but beyond that I am lost... Any info would be much appreciated Ta, Dave
