Hello everyone, this is Jonathan (Shin Alpha), I’m currently in college as a paleontology major and I’ve been busy with life as always, my apologies for my inactivity but due to my busy schedule, I’ve been largely inactive. I was able to find some plant fossils at a nearby outcrop in the Middletown/Cromwell area in CT. And I’ve since donated my finds to Central Connecticut state university geology department. that being said I’ve heard of a Paleozoic site in Newport, Rhode Island called “Cory’s lane“. I’d love to go there one of these days when I have the opportunity, but I don’t know too much about it. Or where the site is at specifically. Feel free to comment down below

Hi Everyone, My 6yr old and I went down to Cory's Lane yesterday afternoon to do some fossil hunting. It was our first trip and I was less sure of what I was doing than I thought I would be, given how much reading I've been doing on here. We spent about an hour and a half there with some chisels and rock hammer, but honestly the shale was so loose and brittle that we could separate layers by hand in many places. We started by going through large chunks that had fallen/broken off the hill outcroppings, and then I dug down about 6" and found nearly black shale. We found a few pieces that we think may have fossil impressions on them, but I simply can't get a good picture of them, the discolorations are kind of faint and I'm having trouble getting good pictures of them. The attached pictures are of the most clear piece we found (and a bonus kiddo doing his best Steve (Minecraft), this was found in shale under the beach about 6" this particular sample was found about 2.5" deep into the shale. I've manipulated the coloring a little in Gimp on the one image to try to bring out the contrast and outlines. Does this look like anything to anyone? I thought it looked similar to some of the cordaites that other users have posted, but not as well preserved as theirs and certainly not confident on my guesswork. Regardless, it was a fun trip and I'm going to head back (solo) very soon.

Hi Everyone, I'm very new to fossil hunting and was considering going down to Cory's Lane in RI as it's only about 40 minutes from me. I scoped the place out on Google Maps and have some questions for anyone that's hunted there. Do you need a permit to fossil collect in RI? It looks like you can't collect in state parks, but I don't think this area is a state park. I'm actually not even sure if it's town property or private? Google wasn't much help and I'm not really sure which department it would fall under to go through state websites. Are people actually allowed to go along the water edge to collect, or is it all private property and we hope no one notices? It looks like there is a residential area and then a school further up the shore line. I don't want my first experience doing this (out of state, no less) to put me on the wrong end of the law. How's the parking situation there, the lot looks very small, like maybe 4 cars max. Are you allowed to park on the street if there's room? I didn't notice any signs when I street viewed the area. I was considering having a family member come with me and they drive an SUV compared to relatively small hatchback. Is anyone here a member of RIMH? Is the club active, is it worth joining if I can, I live in MA? Thanks for any info!

Hi everyone, I just joined up from southeastern MA. I have 0 experience in fossil hunting, but I do own a couple of fossils and have always been interested in them - I just never realized I could go out and look for them myself... After reading up on this forum I think I will try Cory's Lane in RI within the next couple of weeks and possibly the North Attleboro area near the pumping station and town compost pit (if anyone has any experience here, I'd like to ask a couple of general questions about the N. Attleboro site specifically - land ownership, parking, legality of the site given how close it is to an operating business).

I was able to stop at the beach on Corys Lane in Portsmouth Rhode Island for about an hour yesterday. The tide was too high to reach the area I prefer, but there was enough beach to expose a bit of gravel and beach-tumbled shale I could dig in. It was far from ideal and I didn't have much success but it was enjoyable nonetheless. My wife and I were staying only a half hour away but tide and time weren't on our side. Weather made for an interesting day or two as well, contributing to the spectacle along the coast on the way up to the site. In the past I've found some rather nice ferns at this pleasant site, after locating the productive layers of hard, dark gray shale. Those layers weren't available to me yesterday, though I did make an attempt to uncover a new one in the limited space I had. I settled for some soft shale with a few very poorly preserved ferns, and a chunk of shale that may or may not be showing distorted Cordaites stems or leaves. While I tend to burrow underground or smash things with a hammer in search of my fossil finds, my wife tends to sit, and wander and scan the surface intently wherever we may be. She is usually the more successful member of our duo. She came across this find on a short hike along the narrow beach. It looks like distorted Lepidodendron bark to me, but I'm not certain. I would be glad to hear your opinions. My back is aching, my hip is stuck and I'm still removing graphite from my fingernails, but I'm grateful for the short time we spent together, yesterday, at the edge of the sea.

I recently stumbled across a piece of shale and it looked like there might be a carboniferous fern fossilized in it. I am not sure so I would like someone with a more trained eye to weigh in and let me know if this is actually a fern or just a mark in the shale.

Good morning! I probably should have joined here before now, but well, here I am. I’m a medically retired mitigation paleontologist from California, living on the east coast now. I have collected (for funsies and not work) in Australia, Shark Tooth Hill and all over Southern California, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Wyoming, and now Rhode Island! I’m up for adventures sometimes when my health allows, and my 5 year old loves to come with. Husband, not so much but he tolerates my bringing home of bags and boxes

I was going through some material from Cory’s Lane, a Carboniferous fossil site in Rhode Island, when I noticed this fern. It didn’t really look like anything else I had and so I came here for some help. I’m very new to identifying fern fossils, so any help is greatly appreciated.

A break in the bitter winter cold gave me a bit of spring fever this week. Thursday I had to venture to Newport for an errand and the weather was a balmy 30-ish and sunny, I decided to go check out this location. Tides were favorable for hitting the beach this week and I took advantage. With the major storm that came through recently, I figured there might be some new rock eroded down to search through. Armed with only my brick hammer, goggles and gloves, I scoured through pieces for about an hour. The rocks here were pretty well saturated, and those that did not outright disintegrate trying to split them, only revealed mud and ice between the layers. I tried placing them in sunlight to dry a bit, but finding anything in the field was futile. I grabbed some small slabs that for whatever reason seemed promising and brought them home to split. While carefully splitting at the kitchen table, my 4 year-old took up brush-cleaning duties. It was a fun little project for lil man and I. The haul yielded some potential finds, and a thirst for a return adventure with the kids.

Hello from Rhode Island. I am a father of two children who love rock hunting, dinosaur tracks, and spending time with their dad outdoors. We are members at Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, and I have loved their collection since I was my kids' age. Hoping to learn of some areas for day trips so the kids can see tracks/fossils outside of a museum. We have visited most of the advertised locations in CT, and now hoping to stumble on 'finds' in parks or open spaces.

Hi All, I'm having a hard time nailing down an exact ID for this large fern imprint I found earlier this month. This imprint is from the Pennsylvanian time period and was found in the Rhode Island Formation. below I've included a list of the possible suspects/known flora from the Rhode Island Formation. It doesn't help that fossils from the Rhode Island Formation are often distorted. This distortion can be seen in the close up image of the pinnules below. The red arrows are pointing to pinnules I believe are the way they should look versus distorted. Anyone have any ideas as to an ID?? Thanks as always!

Well... I seem to be turning into a Rhode Island native at this point. This past weekend I was able to head down to Cory's Lane for an afternoon of digging. Here's my latest find from the Carboniferous period. This fern still needs to be cleaned up a bit and I'm still trying to nail down an exact ID. At just over 3 feet long this is now my biggest and most complete find to date (1-upped myself again). More pics to come once I finish cleaning this guy up. P.S. This was definitely not fun to carry back to the car . I couldn't save the entire second half of this fern as it was partially destroyed when I ripped up the 8 foot slab of rock this fossil was on. I did manage to save the middle section at least!

In between all of the 4th of July weekend barbecues I was able to make it down to Cory's Lane, Rhode Island for a few hours of shale splitting. The day started out slow with only a few small plant imprints found, but I eventually managed to rip up a 5 foot slab of rock with a larger fern section on one end of it. After cutting the slab down to a little over a foot and a half in length this Pecopteris arborescens manages to go down as the largest fern I've found at this locality! It was a nice start to the long weekend, but the real win was the awesome weather .
