Here’s one for our resident ichnologists. This is far out of my league to id. Found in Branson MO, it’s limestone. Bunch of ripples where I found this. I don’t know Branson strat, so unfortunately that’s the most info I can give you. The trace in question is roughly 1 cm wide. Thanks in advance!

We found this yesterday outside of Sedan Kansas on a 4-H Geology field trip. It was with a thinner layer of sandstone just below a thick layer of Ireland sandstone. One of the leaders thought it was ripple marks. I also thought it looked like ripple marks but wanted a second opinion. We would hope to be able to display this in her geology exhibit as a fossil if it is truly ripple marks.

I’m very curious about these “ripple marks” that I have seen posted a few times on the forum. From what little research I have been able to do (so far...) they seem to be caused by wind or water erosion of the rock. However, there is mention of them possibly being fossilized rippled sediment from the floor of a body of water. So... are these geological erosions or some type of fossilized evidence of water movement? I can see how the erosion would work, but wouldn’t the sediment be compressed during lithification/fossilization and destroy the details if it was from a body of water millions of years old?
