What I know about the things that I’ve found in my yard so far. Chert Limestone Dolomitic limestone Karst pieces Oyters Clam Shells What would cause this rock piece to be black? It’s kind of like a piece of charcoal that had soaked and dried.

I went to the aquatics shop this morning to buy some fish food. They were selling these rocks as decor. Person helping me had no idea re provenance. I think they are geologic in origin. But with the banding was thinking there is an outside chance they could be Stromatolites About hand size.

On this piece of chert it appears to have either an iron or copper coloring at the top but a green undertone at the bottom. On the second picture I’m assuming that was caused by erosion. What would create the green undertone coloring?

I have two fossil rocks like this one, around the same size. I find these in the Telos Lake to Frost Pond range in Northern Maine, around the Chesuncook Dome. Brachiopods everywhere, but this one is odd. Coral or something? It has a little depth to it, and graduates deeper towards the center.

Found this big piece of bedrock with this yellow colored mineral on it. To heavy to lift but I thought was neat. Looks like gold. Any thoughts?

Hi everyone, So, I’m out volunteering at a school. A kid just found this, and wanted to show it to me. He thinks it’s a fossil, and I think so too. I want to be sure. To be honest, it may be a worm fossil. Even I think so. What do you guys think it is? A fossil? Jared

I found this “rock” a while ago. I kept it because it was very heavy for its size but when I got it home it didn’t turn out to be metal of any sort. It reminds me of a corkscrew in a way as it does repeat the same pattern. I really don’t think it’s a concretion. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hey all, I've had this stone with me for over 20 years now and have always wondered if it was actually something or just a random luck-of-the-draw design on a rock. It was found in the Buffalo, New York area if that helps. Any kind of insights would be greatly appreciated.

Found this on a rocky beach in Southern California and have no clue what it could be. Both sides are almost Ying yang like. Let me know if you have any clues!

San Antonio, Tx I just pulled up this piece, which at first I thought maybe it was a mud crack. Its stinks like sea water, hardened on the outside and sounds like porcelain when you tap it. Then below it, the material is very sensitive. Which makes sense to me. Why would it sound like glass?
