Hi all, This is an unusual looking find. Measures about 1 3/4 x 1 1/2 x 1 inch and found on the beach in Tampa Bay, Florida. It is hard as rock or shell, has striations running down and a twig sticking out of the middle. The bottom has tube worms, shell material and a barnacle. My educated guess is a fossilized plant root, like a mangrove (pneumatophores). Or a twig through a seashell like how the native Indians made tools that way by putting a hole in the shell and putting it through a branch and letting it grow in it tight. I have photographed several angles. What do you think it is?

I found this in a creek bed near Patagonia, AZ. It has the long cylindrical hole, and also has a leaf imprint on the other side. There may be more in there, not sure. But I'm wondering especially about the cylinder. Is it something like a root? Or a clam burrow? Or something else? Thanks!

Mosasaur tooth with the replacement tooth still in place. I always wondered what the weird round/oval holes were on the side of mosasaur roots. Finally it all falls into place!- 3 comments

Purchased this one from an auction site for fairly cheap. I'm sure actual tooth is real but is the root matrix real as well especially if coming from Morocco? Thanks!

Real or Fake Spinosaurus tooth
Patient113 posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
New to buying fossils and need some help. My friends birthday is coming up and her favorite dinosaur is a spinosaurus so I bought her two teeth on ebay. The listing says they are authentic "rooted" spinosaurus teeth with no "restore". I have read online that sometimes people will attach cement to the bottom of the teeth and I'm wondering if that's what they did here. I have two weeks to return them so any help would be appreciated. Thanks for the support! -
Real or composite globidens tooth with root?
Wowbnjijdat posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi guys, What is your opinion about this tooth? I think it is a real one, no fractures and no covering matrix. But maybe the experts see some red flags. -
I am preparing to sell a large specimen of Stigmaria, but am not sure of the price range. The specimen was collected from the Penn of eastern Kentucky, and measures a continuous 7'2" or so. The portion recovered above the shale bed is quite detailed and black in color, while the portion recovered within the shale will require some prep. In the photo, the item is the longer bottom specimen. Might someone provide me with a ballpark valuation of this item? STIGMARIA ROOT.pdf

Mosasaur tooth with root- what do you think?

It has obviously been repaired, but the tooth fragment below is intriguing- do you think this is a genuine, or is it fake or composite? -
Spinosaurus tooth composit?
Baryonyx posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
So a seller was offering me these teeth, the biggest is about 13,5cm long. I am interested in the long one wich looks like it is fully rooted. But the question is is it a composit? -
Is the white part down there peeled of enamel or the root. It also looks like a port of the tooth was cut or worn down.

From the album: Mitchu Fossils
Found a bunch of teeth from this site but this is the only one that had most of the root intact -
New here to the forum and to fossil hunting. Found a few teeth over the past few weeks was hoping to get some help with identification and where to find more in the low country. Living in mount pleasant with access to a 23 foot bay boat as well as a few paddle boards. Would love to meet some great people with the same interests as myself and my wife. We would love to host some new friends on our boat for some hunting. If you are in the area and wouldn't mind the company of some newbs that are eager to learn and hunt send me a PM. We are looking forward to becoming knowledgeable on the area and meeting others that share our interests. I have attached a picture of a few of the things we found any help on ID would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A rooted tooth of a mosasaur.

Would anyone have any sort of idea of how much this Stigmaria fossil might be worth? It is approximately 12 in. x 6 in., I do not know where it originally is from. It was found within the landscape rocks of my sisters house, which is in southwest Ohio. From what I know of these, they are Carboniferous and not typically found around here, since most of the fossils found here (Cincinnati, OH) are usually Ordovician. I was thinking this stigmaria might have been transported with rocks from a quarry for landscaping purposes. The house is over 50 years old, so I have no way of knowing where the rocks came from. I was thinking of offering my brother in law something for this fossilized tree root (He does not collect fossils by the way.) What would this stigmaria be worth to someone who collects fossils like me? Thanks to anyone who replies, your opinions will be appreciated.

I would greatly appreciate any help/direction on figuring out what (if anything) these two objects may be and if they are similar in origin. I was thinking the root of a tooth, but really haven't had much luck in my research but will admit I've not gone far outside of googling as much as I could think of for the region where I found these to see if I can find anything similar that was IDd. I copied the main concerns from FAQs on posting here, so hopefully I was able to provide enough detail for some direction. I can try to get better pictures with closer views if you think it will help, I was anxious and shot these with my iPhone as soon as I got home. 1- LOCATION Greenville, NC Greensmill Run. (GMR) 2- GEOLOGY/Formation Generally this location is part of the york town formation, Miocene-Pliocene-cretaceous 4- ASSEMBLAGE Shark teeth, belemnites, bopods, mouthplates from singrays/skates, whale bone. 5- DISCOVERY I went to a new part of the stream today, it was much higher upstream than I usually venture, with rapid running water. I was walking on what felt like a giant rock for about 20 yards then sand with loose gravel came up so I plopped my stuff and this is one of the finds with lots of shark teeth. 6- CHARACTERISTICS I thought it was an only chipped rock at first but a second look and I thought it was really close to this other item I had found that was much smaller (on the right in the photo) I was thinking maybe some sort of tooth root? Maybe it/they are just rocks? There was really nothing else similar in shape or color in the area today and generally when I dig in other spots along the GMR. The brown color, texture similar to and density being much lighter than a rock for both objects leads me to wonder what this may be?
