Name: Sestrocladia sp. Class: Hexactinellida Age: K2st Location: Saratov, Russian Federation A unique specimen, that once was damaged by storm, but continued living. It changed the dimension of growth and grew not additional roots (as usual) but additional stem!

Greetings, I visited the Island of Ruegen on the Baltic Coast of Germany this summer. Flint nodules weathering out from its chalk cliffs are well known for an early Maastrichtian marine fauna consisting principally of sea urchins, belemnites, and sponges. The attached fossil was found on the beach, in shallow water, immediately south of the ferry terminal at Sassnitz. I'd welcome any leads on it as it does not resemble any sponge from the Ruegen fauna that I have seen so far.

Found this in Grandpa's rock pile..he collected rocks and miscellany in his tromps throughout Central and Eastern Oregon..he has passed so I have no idea where exacty he came upon this treasure... It is 6-sided chunk of 4 to 5-sided artifaces, seemingly attached in the center of the chunk, or not...some have closed "seed pods", one has open seed pod that look like kidney bean shape, perhaps like a flower gone to seed in stages...aprox 2.5 inches each side....there is not a hole in the chunk for anything looking like a stalk or stem...rings around the outer edges of each part suggest marine life, such as a shelled creature, though since it is stuck in a nice chunk package, not sure.... Any ideas??? Thank you!

All I can say is that it's a sponge... I've looked through "Sponges of the Ordovician Maquoketa Formation in Minnesota and Iowa" Rigby and Bayer, 1971 and can't seem to find a match there. The Maquoketa is similar in age to some of the formations in the Cincinnati area if that helps at all. Sponge Maquoketa Formation, Elgin member Upper Ordovician, Richmondian Northeast Iowa Size: 2.1cm long 1.7cm wide across bottom.
