A good friend of mine is working in an area real close to Cape Town, South Africa. He's an avid fossil collector and wants to know if it's legal to collect fossils off any of the beaches there. I did some research and it appears that South Africa has some pretty strict laws/rules that prohibit the collecting of any fossils, removing them, exporting them, etc. without a permit from South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) . Permits seem to be issued only when specimens go to a museum or university for study, etc. Just curious to know if this is still the current law/situation so my friend knows what he can or can't do/collect etc.

Backyard was a prehistoric lake. Dino fossils found close by. Found these recently. They clearly seem to be teeth with a root stem and ridges. Possibly some herbivore, or else, I could just be wrong. Any help would be humbly appreciated Please zoom in. Could not get good pics with file size limit.

Purchasing Tyrannosaur teeth

I don't have any tyrannosaur teeth in my collection, so I am looking for advice when purchasing teeth from these famous theropods. Does this tooth look look like daspletosaurus, it 9cm long. The seller has not put any locality on as far as I can see.

I was told by a friend that most spinosaurus teeth are sigilmassasaurus. Is this true? If so, does this make spinosaurus rare and sigilmassasaurus the common one? Sorry about my limited knowledge on these things.

I’m wondering what the age of the Otodus teeth are in Morocco. Does anybody have any papers on the teeth there? Also, does anybody know how many genera there are there? Thanks

Hi all! I am new to the forum and relatively new to fossil collecting. I would like to try my hand at preparation, but am not sure where to start. It seems like purchasing mosasaur teeth still embedded in matrix and slowly working to get them out might be a good way to practice with cheap and easily obtainable fossils, but I do not know how to go about this. In my head I imagine purchasing a few 20-30 dollar teeth with matrix, chisels, and scribers to be a great and (relatively) cheap way to begin practicing various techniques that I intend use for the rest of my life, is there anything else I need to be aware of, or perhaps other recommended forms of practicing preparation and removal of fossils from rock for beginners with a plethora of patience/time? Hopefully this makes sense!

Does anyone know how large basilosaurus canines can get? I don't know if they're all technically canine teeth, but I'm referring to the 4 to 5 single-point front teeth. Crown & root together.

Quite some years back my late uncle purchased the attached fossil at a gem show here locally. Too be completely honest it looks kind of fake to me... but im might just have a untrained eye. My Aunt has taken the picture. I Couldn't possibly imagine it being from around here so I'm really not sure what age it could be or what location it is from. I'll try to acquire some more photos with a scale shortly. I know its a shot in the dark but any feedback would be greatly appreciated. -Nick

I've not had a chance to post my finds here in a while but over the past few months I've found some new specimens of Lower Carboniferous/Mississippian marine shark teeth I wanted to share! These were collected at various sites in the Midland Valley of Scotland from the Blackhall Limestone, an extensive formation with interesting variations in fauna at each different locality. Ctenoptychius sp. Anterior tooth in lingual view, 6mmx7mm.

Hey guys, Just purchased this lovely looking tooth however the seller doesn't know what it's from? Any suggestions would be great. A few people have said that it could possibly be raptor? It has some beautiful serrations. Looking for to your suggestions. Thanks

Hello everybody Here are some fish all directly from Solnhofen. I bought these many years ago at the local fossil store in Solnhofen. No idea about species, I just can assure these fish are all from there Looking for any Dino teeth material (except Spino and Abelisauridae from Morocco) or rooted Mosasaur teeth (maybe even with a small jaw fragment?). I can trade more fish for one tooth If you want these fish, but feel your tooth is worth more, maybe we can still make a deal. Let us talk about it Be aware that I live in Germany, however shipping to the US or other parts of the world is no problem. Will check this once I know the destination, because of the weight. I have a fondness for fossil teeth that have unusual coloes to them. I think it would be nice to see some of Yours. Any type of tooth will do as long as it has atypical color(s) to it. Here are a few from My Sharktooth hill finds.... A porpoise tooth.. And some shark teeth (front and back views... Looking forward to seeing what Y'All have! Tony

Hey all! Well, if you've read some of my previous posts you'll see that throughout 2018 I've been working in Maryland and Virginia. While here I've been visiting some of the local haunts along the Atlantic to find.... really anything, and I have! HOWEVER, I have yet to find a single shark tooth!!! The rub now is timing. I am about to accept a new position with a company and my time on the Bay is coming to an end. I'm here this week and plan on visiting Matoaka Beach for the first time tomorrow. I am going to leave my hotel in Columbia, MD at 8am. Any suggestions, tricks, hints.... scooby snacks????? I've been talking about finding my son a Meg tooth for a year now and I'm coming up with squat! hahaha

Hey guys, This tooth was recently purchased by a family member and they gave it to me as a Christmas present. They don't know much about fossils and thought it was the real deal. However soon after getting my hands on it I could tell it was a fake or at least partially a fake. The root was too big and it smelled kind of strange. I didn't have the heart to tell my family member that it was fake. It had only been in the draw around 10 days and it literally started falling apart. At this point we tried to contact the seller as they had listed it as a real genuine tooth (they mentioned small restorations but not that the entire root was fake). I didn't get a reply and this angered me as it wasn't cheap. It cost over £400. The guy is still selling fakes and people are buying them. I don't want anyone to feel as disappointed as I did. He even has a fake tooth on there right now. It's frustrating because it ruins it for everyone else who is interested in collecting real fossils. As mentioned the whole root was fake and was like a pink putty. After poking around more the whole thing crumbled in my hand. Even the tooth itself had strange white stuff embedded in it and started to chip off. I'm sure many of you are great at spoting fakes but perhaps this could help a new member or someone who's not sure about these kind of things. Thanks for reading!

I dont have a lot of room in my fossil/computer room,, so when I start to sell off some things,,,,,,,,,, they get in the way. Does anyone else have this problem? Its not a bad problem so maybe I should just quit complaining. or get a bigger room? RB

Hi there, I'm wondering if anyone can help me identify what this belongs too? Location is morocco which we all know can be risky, however it doesn't look like a typical fake to me. Not my expertise but would like to know an ID for it? Please see bottom image! Typical Fake Is it real? What does it belong too? Thanks in advance

I was told this is a bobcat. It is said to be found in Florida. I didn't think it looked for sure like one but I don't have any mammal fossils yet so I wanted it anyway. I can't tell what it is though. Some of the tooth tips are chipped and the shape looks a bit strange. The rule is in centimeters (I accidentally wrote millimeters at first)
