Hi, I grew up in Nebraska and somewhere or another I found this stone. We used to find lots of Mastodon Teeth, Camel teeth etc. in the Platte River Valley. And I know Nebraska was an ocean a long long time ago so occasionally we'd come across Megalodon teeth as well. I found this though. The backside is very smooth and round, it has what looks to be a well defined yolk like interior and what looks to my untrained eye to be a cross section of a small skull/cranium with beak like end. I would like to know if this is what I think it is.

I know this is a cetacean ear bone and I know it is from Sharktooth Hill but that is ablut all I know for sure. It is pretty large at 3" long and 1.5'' wide which would seem to rule out of the smaller dolphin-like whales. My first thought was Aulophyseter morreci. It could also be a mysticeti as well. Regardless of species, it is a really nice addition to our STH whale collection.

Help Identify. Petrified Wood? Petrified Cactus? Something else?
SCSeaGal15 posted a topic in Fossil ID
Found this antiquing. Was only marked "petrified rock"..It is black & charcoal gray in color with a vertical ribbed texture and some rounded ends. Measures 6.5" tall x 5.5" x 4" and weighs 8lbs 1.1 oz. Is it petrified wood ? Petrified cactus? Or something else? It's only letting me upload 1 photo. Took pics with phone and guess their too big. Will try to post more.- 13 replies

Hell Creek vertebra ID help- maybe a theropd caudal vertebra ??
fossilsonwheels posted a topic in Fossil ID
When I first set out to collect Dinosaur fossils, a fossil dealer with a long history in the industry and from whom I had purchased shark fossils from had this listed for sale. It was sold as a Troodon formosus ( I am aware it is an invalid taxon). When I committed to purchasing this, i was unaware that only Troodontid teeth had been found in Hell Creek and I tended to believe dealer ID's. I do not regret the purchase. It is a great little bone to have in our education program and it was not expensive. We want to cover Troodontids in our education program which is why I bought this. It was cheaper than a tooth. It was also a good lesson to learn early on and without a significant financial investment. I do my homework know before purchasing a dinosaur fossil and if I have questions, I put it here. It seems unlikely that that the dealer ID is correct just based on the lack of Troodontid bones that come from Hell Creek. I want to know we have and be accurate in what we present to kids so I have put some effort into figuring this out. It is a very small vertebra as you can see in the pictures. I did find some small theropod caudal vertebrae that look similar including a Troodontid. I have done some homework on this and tried to figure it out but I can not get much further on my own. All I can say for sure is that is does not appear to be a fish or mammal and I do not think it is a crocodilian either. Any thoughts or information would be helpful !!- 5 replies

Been hunting the NSR now for a few years and this is the first time I've found a bunch of bones in matrix. Was out yesterday with @zoocosmolinaand her husband at a new hunting spot for all of us. We had an absolute blast! I found the following and the bones have a "fishy" look to em. Bones exposed on all 6 sides. I'd love to expose more to try and figure out what may be encased. Any recommendations for someone who has never prepped before? It's about 7 inches long x 4 inches wide x 3.5 inches deep.

Hi folks. spotted this on a recent holiday in the UK to the south coast ( Dorset - the Jurassic coast ). the rock was approx. 250kg and I got it down to 80kg to get it in the car. the reason was I noticed this strange raised disc edge shape within the rock which does not appear man made. the rock is extremely hard. I plan to start removing the rock to expose more of it as I'm curious. any ideas as to if this is even a fossil and if so what it could be.

Here's another fossil from Penn Dixie I'm having trouble with. It's from the Devonian shale, and it can be hard to see in the photo as it blends in really well and is a bit worn. There is a trilobite in the upper part of the photo, I've circled the interesting feature in red. It's a circular shape with ribbed features radiating from the center. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure if it's actually a fossil or just an anomaly in the rock.

What a haul! Rare goodies from the St. Leon roadcut, Indiana. (Trilobites!)
FossilSniper posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
About a month ago, I headed out on two fossil trips to the well-known St. Leon roadcut in Indiana. I was hunting in the Liberty formation (late Ordovician) with the sole goal of finding some nice trilobites (which I definitely achieved!). Along with multiple rare trilobites, I was able to find some excellent examples of other fossils. The spoils were totally awesome, and I am itching to go back. I hope you enjoy. Best for last.- 25 replies

Hello all! Another question from a fossil and geology newbie. I found a bag of interesting rocks in my home today. It contained what looked like store bought rocks but I have literally no idea where they came from or how I got them. Included were two fern looking fossils and I'm not sure if they're real or not. This is probably an extremely stupid question, but I just want to make sure. Thank you! (also my apologies for the terrible lighting in the photo, I can attach more if needed)

Not quite sure what is going on here. In my class we were handed a box of fossils and this was in it. My theory is that its the body of a nautilus. Let me know what your thoughts are.
