Hello all I recently got permission from my family to build a preparation room, so I'm getting some tools to finally start preparing fossils. I've got a few fossils from my own hunts that I can start practicing on, but those are all in extremely hard, sticky rocks, and often badly preserved. I would however like to get some fossils from other locations to practice different techniques, mainly with air abrasion and to get a feel with the preparation of a wild variation of fossils. I picked some fossils (mainly from the USA), that aren't too complex I think, but please correct me if I'm wrong. - Flexicalymene or other trilobites from that are fit to prep with a combination of air abrasion and scribes, preferably some from Ohio, New York, since I think those rocks aren't too hard? - 18 inch Green River fish - White River formation fossils - Hell Creek/Lance... bones, not sure how hard these are, but stuff like this really interests me. I would prefer a couple of partials/broken specimens to practice on, and then a few nice ones to prepare after some first practice. Here are some things I'm offering in return. I will/can probably offer more, but here is at least some of the stuff I can trade. 1: Big (30 cm) vertebra from the Ouled Abdoun location in Morocco. 2 small parts glued back 2: Rooted Carcharodontosaurid tooth from the Kem Kem beds in Morocco, just shy of 10 cm (4 inch). Looks all natural to me. 3: Chilotherium jaw with associated 'tusk'. 4: Chemically prepared Keichousaurus. Very large one (skeleton measures over 30 cm). Slab looks unbroken and all natural. Hope someone can help me

Looking for advice about finding unprepped Oklahoma trilobites
kmmerwick posted a topic in General Fossil Discussion
I know members can't mention specific businesses on the forum. So, what would be the best way for me to find quarries in OK that may sell unprepped trilobites. I've been tearing up the internet and am having a hard time finding contact info for places like this. Is there a, "directory" of sorts that would help me with my search? Thanks in advance! -
Hey everyone! So recently I purchased some unprepared Moroccan trilobites. I am having a very hard time preparing them and am making a lot of mistakes. And I was just wondering if these maybe are not the best for practice for a beginner, or is it just me? Thanks, @fossilhunter21

Hello other fossil loving people! I am so excited to be diving into fossil hunting and preparation. I was one of those kids who begged to watch Nova documentaries instead of cartoons. I always had an obsession with the past and paleontology in particular. As often happens, other priorities kept me busy and though I never stopped loving paleontology, I believed I would never get to explore it for myself. Fast forward many years later to when the kids have all gone off to college and I finally have the time to focus on myself. Up until this last year my life was devoted to service to others, be it children, husband, elderly parents, etc. So much so that once the last kid left home I got hit with a serious case of empty nest! I am embarrassed to admit it, but it took a good 6 months before it dawned on me that I could finally do what I wanted to do! Of course THEN I had to figure out what that was. Thanks to the wonders of the internet I have been able to explore any thought that pops into my head, and it didn't take long for my interest in paleontology to take center stage. I was so excited to find that fossil hunting, prep, and study are now available for anyone to explore. I poked around until I decided it was time to dive in and try my hand with fossils. I have yet to get my first specimen as I have been researching the topic ahead of time but I am now ready. I found this forum to be of amazing help in guiding my interests and providing resources. I am going to start by getting a few unprepared fossils to learn on before I go out looking for my own. I live in Vermont and this time of year the weather is still not conducive to outdoor activities. I look forward to learning from, and sharing with the people on this forum. I will be choosing my first fossil, a trilobite, this week and I will be sharing the learning process as I go. YEAH SCIENCE!

So I am brand new to fossils and am having a hard time finding unprepared trilobites. I don't really have the ability to go hunt my own at this time but I want to get into preparation. I found the U-Dig site where I can order like 40lbs of shale but that's a bit much for me at the moment. I am just trying to find a few trilobites to get started and to get a feel for the tools and prepping. I was on online but had a hard time finding ones that had not already been prepped. Not to mention I have been warned about the risk of fraud buying trilobites on online. If anyone can direct me to where I can get some sweet rock bugs I would be very grateful!

Any idea what these raptor teeth are, or if they're even are raptor teeth? Allegedly there from Lance formation, Wyoming. Definitely not in the best condition, but hey, any fossil is a good fossil.

Psittacosaurus Partial Skeleton?
RyanDye posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
I found this Psittacosaurus specimen online, pretty positive it is a real fossil, however not sure if this is really a Psittacosaurus for various reasons. Here are the pictures associated with it, it was pretty vague with no location to where it was found, which is why I am posting it in the is it real because of lack of information.- 5 replies
