From the album: Fossil Finds
-
Hi all! I'm a fairly new fossil fan and a middle school science teacher. To my excitement, this was left in my classroom by a previous teacher. It looks to be bone and possibly petrified wood? I was hoping someone with more knowledge could help me out. Much thanks!!!!

Riverside Co., CA Lots of petrified wood in the area, but most of that is much darker and this looked like it might be a fragment of bone. Thoughts?

I grabbed this rock as a friend was tossing it out of a flower pot, mostly because it initially looked like petrified wood. After studying it some, I don't think it is, but I am not certain how to identify pet wood (am researching how to do this, though)? I don't see regular patterns on the ends of the rock, which I would expect to find in petrified wood. Is that correct? Found in Alabama, but no idea where it's origin is, since it was in a flower pot. See last photo for size comparison to a water bottle lid - it's a small rock. I checked it for transparency and some edges are transparent but not the entire rock. Thanks! Ramona

I found this in a natural spring in 2022 down in Florida near Apopka. We were in the area for a family vacation and as we were floating down the stream, my hand hit this, so I went under water and dug it up. Not sure whether it's bone or a small piece of wood fossilized. It sounds like marble when I place it on our counter. So whatever it is, it seems to be fossilized/petrified.Thanks for any info you may have.

Found these pieces near Palos Verdes CA was wondering if it’s petrified wood. Thank you . Both pics are the same rock front and back.

Something that has been a long time coming... As I have no air tools for prepping fossils, I got the bee in my bonnet to try using bits of wood and glue to break away bits of matrix partially covering leaves from McAbee specimens that I collected years ago (before the gov't ban on collecting there). It worked pretty well on these few pieces I tried. The only difficulty came when the matrix to be removed was too thick and integrated with the surrounding matrix. Then it would only peel the thinnest layer off the top. Another round or rounds could eventually accomplish the task in this case, as I did in one instance. Glue used was Lepage's gel-type superglue. I let them cure for a half a day to a day before pulling. Soaking the stick in a jar of acetone frees the broken-off piece if wanting to retain it (as I did with the Ginkgo below). This could work on any number of similar fossils from e.g. Green River, etc. but I can't guarantee consistent results!

Another great day in the sunshine with friends. Kayaking in a slow current, finding chest deep water, sun shining, a few drops of rain. The deep water is aerobic exercise for me, really helps my back both during and after. We were in 2 locations. One was chest deep , finding mostly small shark teeth. I think there are a couple of Tiger shark parasymphyseals/symphyseals there, some nice Hemis/Tigers...and one of my friends found the beat_up Horse tooth and asked if I thought it was pre_Equus. I said I was not sure but I would give someone on TFF an opportunity to answer. @Meganeura Have you looked at enough fossettes and plications to hazard a guess on Equus or not? Slight variation on angle for 2nd photo We hunting the morning at the 1st spot, and after eating lunch, I headed downstream to a place we had hunted extensively and friends avoided because it was "hunted" out. But I had some great memories there of black enamel, black rooted megs, and I could bask in the memories hunting old locations... My 1st sieve had the 2.5 inch Meg !!! Nothing better than Luck. There was a top layer of 4-6 inches of gravel.. I quickly picked up a piece of fossilized, a large dolphin vert, the process of a dugong Vert to join the Meg. The detail on all of these is excellent, meaning no water erosion for a couple of million years. Tells me a lot about where they came from.....A photo of the Meg taken on the river... I am trying to identify that toe bone or hoof core.....it only has 3 sides to photo.... 1st photo has an articulation, last photo is concave, middle photo convex. @PODIGGER Jim, I am hoping that you can help me here. Seems like you see a lot of bones... Which way is down ? Which way is up? Thanks Jack

Hi everyone, When I least expected it, I made an unexpected catch while I was fishing in the snake river, at the bottom of the canyon near Twin Falls, Idaho. Since nothing was biting, I decided to set my pole down and look at some rocks. While I was digging through some loose soil in the river, I found this. It appears to be a small piece of petrified wood. When I found it, I said to myself, “Well, it’s not a fish, but it’s something.” At least I got something while fishing! Jared

I was prepping the garden today at my house. While I was building one of the raised beds, I found this sticking out of the dirt. It’s definitely rock, and it looks like wood. However, I cannot tell if this is petrified wood or something else. Can someone help me ID this? Location where it was found was Dietrich, Idaho.

I have looked under magnification but can't find any wood cell structure so this one is throwing me off but still leaning toward wood. Under magnification I did find hairline striations but those can also be found in some enamel. This piece is also polished looking but it is as it was found could it be a tooth fragment?.

I’ve got multiple pieces of wood, some with original bark, as peat with remenants of stuff in, that is all around 4,500-6,000 years old from an ancient forest, but now that it’s come out of the sea will it just rot like normal? What would be the best way to preserve it?

Hello. I have an opportunity to purchase this item but I am not sure if it is a Mammoth or Mastodon Tusk or a piece of petrified wood? It is 36" long and weighs 97 pounds. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Found within creek bed in Orange County, California. Have had this one for some time now. Always thought it looked sort of like petrified wood but is difficult to tell. The answer may be more obvious to someone else. Appreciate any input. Thanks.

Hello! I hesitate to post after my last terrible misidentification of fossilised wood, but your kind help made me study harder, learn more, look harder - thank you! So I’m back with another request - I think I might have actually found wood this time? These are all from the Kimmeridgian Helmsdale Boulder Beds or nearby Portgower Boulder Beds, Scotland, UK. Dark photos are wet, mostly they go quite pale when dried out. In this case, I know wood is a known find in these areas, and I’ve found a scant few photos from seasoned collectors / geologists of finds from these locations said to be fossil wood that looks similar. But I’ve turned into the biggest pessimist and there was only a small amount of info to go on. If anyone would be kind enough to just confirm either way, I’d be so grateful (thank you!).

Found in the Peace River, FL. Arcadia area. I wasn't too excited about it but a man who was fossiling nearby wanted to see what I had found when I was leaving the spot and he said it was mammoth ivory. I do not think it is and told him that I didn't think so but he insisted quite enthusiastically. I am still learning and am a beginner so I told him he may be right and moved on with my day. But now I cant stop thinking about it haha, if that man is in here, I swear if you were trying me! The texture is hard and sounds quite like ceramic when tapped or dropped. It kind of appears rusty and dusty but it's not dusty and doesnt crumble when touched. I tried to include photos next to a penny and well lit from every angle. Thank you!

Hi to everybody, will be posting pics of possible petrified eggs. I am so happy to find this site, thanks to everyone.

I found this peace of rock that looked, in my opinion like a piece of wood. It was found on beach known to have wood fossils. I want to make sure what it is and if it is just a rock.

Hi, I’m new here, just posting a couple of recent finds from a recent trip to the surf coast in Victoria, Australia. This one I believe to be a nugget of petrified wood, found embedded in a cliff shelf sedimentary layer above volcanic basalt (from an eruption previously dated to 26Mya). I can see clear wood grain (I think), so pretty confident this one is petrified wood, but would appreciate any comments/suggestions! A lot of the fossils in the surrounding layers are echinoids and brachiopods, so I am guessing fossilized driftwood? the object is hard and smooth to the touch, much heavier than wood. I have cleaned it up a bit, removing sedimentary material and some black gunk on the surface (still some visible). Cheers, Oli
