@Ancient Bones found this specimen in the micro fossil material from the Aurora Mine spoil pile in Aurora, North Carolina. As usual, I like to photograph her finds in order to add them to her Galleries. This one, I believe is a partial Basking Shark, Cetorhinus sp., gill raker, but I would like to confirm that ID before labeling. It closely resembles the one on Elasmo.com. and the one I found from Sharktooth Hill matrix. Any input is welcome. @Al Dente @MarcoSr @sixgill pete

I was very fortunate to obtain some loose matrix and chunks of matrix that I need to break down. I really have only been working on the loose matrix so far. It has not m.uch but has been extremely productive with amazing teeth. This is the first time I have gone through matrix from this area and the colors are amazing. The matrix is absolutely loaded with so much great stuff. Most of the items I have found so far are firsts for me. Enjoy the pics! @JBMugu I have barely scratched the survive with the big chucks of matrix but these two verts came out of it. They cleaned up nice! I needed something to satisfy my itch since I still cannot get out. So i had purchased a box of matrix from Lee Creek. I spent the weekend seperating the matrix into 4 different sizes. I was excited to try my smaller double decker sifter and it worked perfect. I also used that over a window screen. I found a ton of new items that I do not have in my collection. Including my first croc tooth. It is super tiny but it is my first. These are my finds after my first run through. I think I am going to have to get some type of magnifying glass for the smaller stuff. Any feedback on incorrect ID's is much appreciated. Enjoy the pics. Lee Creek Cetorhinus (Basking Shark) teeth are extremely rare. While the Oligocene specimens and some Miocene locations have been assigned to C. parvus and the later (Pliocene-extant) have been assigned to C. maximus; the Lee Creek teeth have not been assigned to species level. The west coast species from the middle Miocene Sharktooth Hill Bonebeds have been assigned as a new species C. huddlestoni (Welton, 2014); and is a very common tooth there.

ok, I found a tooth for sale labeled as Cetorhinus maximus (basking shark) looking at the photo, does it look to be a genuine basking shark tooth? It was found at shark tooth hill, and measures 0.303" (7.69 mm). I read that most teeth from the basking shark measure 5-6 mm which would make this one huge. So do you think this is indeed a good basking shark tooth specimen, or from another type of shark? Thanks !!!

Help With Id Of Small Fish Teeth And Possible Basking Shark Tooth
fossilover posted a topic in Fossil ID
All of these teeth have been pulled from reject material taken from the PCS Mine in Aurora, NC. In one of the pictures are a bunch of slender, pointy fish(?) teeth that I keep finding in my micro material. These teeth range anywhere from just a few mm long to about 10 mm. I cannot find anything remotely close to a close match. I have even searched the elasmo site with no luck. The other tooth was found in the same material. At first I thought it was whale shark, but upon comparing them to this tooth the profile just looks too different. I think I got a positive ID when I searched the elasmo site once again and reviewed pics of a basking shark tooth. I have never actually found one or seen one in person, so I guess I'm just looking for confirmation on this one. Any ideas?- 6 replies
