Greetings, I’ve recently gotten back into prospecting fossils and I’m looking for some suggestions on sites to visit in western Pennsylvania. I frequently visit Ambridge PA to find fern and Calamite fossils from the Mahoning fm and would like to find more. I also would like to find fossils of early Permian (tetrapods, plants, or invertebrates). I hear that Washington county (south of Pittsburgh) has some great spots and would like to know if it were true. I also would like to show some of my findings from Ambridge as well. Note: I’d like this to be suggested places not just western PA but West Virginia and eastern Ohio as well.

I was just collecting out at the Ambridge site over the weekend and among the hundreds of ferns I found, I pulled out this piece which appears to be rolled up one. It especially seems like a fern given that there’s a Calamites stem just to the bottom right. I posted on the Reddit fossil ID forum and people are saying it’s a goniatite but I’m really not seeing it and I also can’t find anything online saying something like that would even be there. I would love some insight as to what it could be regardless, because I’ve been to this site a few times now and haven’t found something like this before so it’s probably pretty rare regardless.

Last week, I was in NE Ohio for my nephew's wedding. During my spare time, I ran across to Ambridge Pa. and collected a few fossils. In trying to ID everything I found, I came up with a few ?s for you plant experts. 1. Calamites leaf? 2. There are 2 bumpy things on this, top center (less obvious) and lower left. My guess is bark? 3. Sphenopteris?? 4. These are likely Pecopteris fronds of Psaronius fern trees. Can these two different species be further identified?
