Tonight, I was trying to pull up directions for a friend to the wonderful astrodapsis collection site in scotts valley...seems that this site has been posted with no trespassing signs...as indicated by a few posts i've seen online..if this is indeed true...its a loss of a valuable site...its an area that was collector friendly for kids and beginners...it was a wonderful spot that started many collections..I will miss this spot.

Hello! During the pandemic, I've spent a lot more time at home doing classes, and as a result, I've had more time for hobbies I've been interested in paleontology for my whole life, but I was mainly involved by keeping up to date with research on the natural history of these fossilized organisms instead of the actual geology and collecting of the fossils themselves. I was thinking of gifts for a friend, and I decided on sending him a nice Orthoceras when I realized how much he appreciates natural history. This purchase pretty much sprung me into these fossil forums and I'm glad to see this place is so active! Specialized online forums are rare nowadays, and I'm so grateful for all I've learned here so far. Also, this community seems quite friendly and knowledgeable! Definitely a change from most forums I've lurked. I still have so much to learn about fossils, and I'm more of a lurker than active poster honestly, so I'll probably be stuck reading old threads on here for awhile before talking too much, but I'm looking forward to talking with you guys! Here's a pic of the valley I took when hiking a trail in Mount Diablo State Park It's just about 10 minutes from my house in the East Bay.

Hello new TFF friends, I moved to the Bay Area of Northern California just under 3 years ago. I lived in Utah my entire life before that. I’ve done lots of rural wandering in Utah, and the beautiful geology there led me to start getting interested in rockhounding. Then work and life got in the way and I haven’t done anything for about 9 years. And now I’m in California and have twin 8 year olds and would like to introduce them to fossil hunting since one of the twins really loves dinosaurs. Obviously we don’t need to find dinosaur bones, or anything vertebrate for that matter, but I’m wondering if you can help us find a few sites that would be appropriate for a virgin fossil hunter like me. I found the TFF site via Google, and like the info in the Fossils for Kids section, but it looks like those posts are from 2010 so I’m wondering if they’re still valid, in terms of land access. Can anyone confirm or suggest a few sites? One other note: I also have a special-needs teenager with limited mobility, so I’m looking for sites that don’t require a hike to get to. The easiest of the easy. Thanks very much in advance for your help!

Interesting little 'rocks' from today. 2 may be nothing, 2 I'm pretty sure about, and 2, seem to be imprints. Hope you guys can tell me. Again, Half Moon Bay. Also, how do I clean these?

My daughter insisted I bring this home, and I wondered if it's a fossil or just an interesting rock.

I have a question. So I live in Florida, and looking a the map I am attaching I live in the Hawthorne Group. So.... if I dig in a creek am I likely to find fossils? I'm trying to look at these geological maps and distinguish areas which are likely to yield fossils. Particularly shark teeth. Can anyone school me up in this department? Thank you!!

Hi Everyone, I'm just getting back into serious fossil collecting after 40 years in the high tech industry where I didn't have too much free time to do so. I am mostly retired now and looking forward to getting out to collecting sites. Also looking forward to learning from all of you!

I live in Los Gatos, CA and have explored all the fossil locations I know of nearby, mostly capitola. I'm traveling to the east coast over the summer - I will be spending two weeks in New York, NY, about a week in New Harbor ME, and several days in Milford, PA. It would be great if you could recommend some sites nearby! Thanks
