Hi all! I was recently visiting with another naturalist, helping them to identify some of the donated rocks and fossils in their collection. There were a few that stumped us both, and unfortunately they couldn't tell me where any of the specimens were originally found, or the period anything was from with any certainty. I'll make separate posts for the different pieces. But here's part one to start with. A partial jaw with large molars, certainly from a large herbivore. The other naturalist suggested perhaps from a moose, and I also found similarities in the shape to other cervids, so I think this is the right track, but I'm far from an expert, especially on teeth. the jaw measures 8" long, and 3-4" wide. I didn't think to measure individual teeth, but each is over an inch wide.

I found this large, flat bone fragment in a southeast Texas gravel bar. Not sure if there's enough detail here to make a solid ID, especially on the articular process. I tried comparing it to other large mammal flat bones like ribs and scapulas, but couldn't figure it out. Hoping someone with more experience can help ID it. Thanks for any help!

More overburden mammal fossils, these two are some of the better mammal vertebrae I've found. Any guesses? I've had a hard time trying to pin point it based solely on their shape. Ill post the fish vertebrae next. s, these two are some of the better mammal vertebrae I've found. Ill post the fish vertebrae next.

Picked this up on the river after the big flooding, I usually find bison but this seems too slender to be bison. I put a cow/bison tibia next to it for comparison. I know it’s not a fossil but if I posted on other sites i know id hear human over and over. I thought maybe horse but looking at my comparative book horse tibia are more beefy than a cow. Elk maybe? Some Pleistocene fauna? It’s heavy ish but it’s not fossilized
