A brief North TX tour:Eagle Ford group, Paw Paw, Goodland formations
Shaun-DFW Fossils posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
I’ve been busy hunting, but I got behind on posting..I’ll try to get back in the habit. Yesterday I made quite the trek around various parts of DFW. I’m a semi-professional drummer, so I had a gig at 11:30am, which gave me a short amount of time beforehand to swing by an eagle ford exposure around highway 360 (Tarrant County). The recent rains adequately eroded the ground, revealing a nice 15 inch petrified log. I suspect this is the coal zone that I find nearby at other locales, because the log has some parts that appear burned. I should have grabbed an initial in situ pic, because the end piece (not pictured) was broken but in place just an inch or two away from the larger piece, you could just tell it had been broken for a long time. I’ve had issues with previous pet wood pieces from this zone warping or disintegrating after a few weeks, so while this piece is solid and heavy, I might coat it with a polyurethane spray, since that has worked well on my other pieces. After my gig, I went to a Fort Worth formation construction spot, finding a few big macrasters but this one had been picked over like bugs off the back of a gorilla (I’m always looking for new analogies), so almost no ammonites. I then went to a nearby Paw paw spot that my accompanying friend knew about, finding my first micro fossils, some nice echinoids, gastropods, and over 100 little ammonites, I believe the mantelliceras species. My friend found a shark tooth, which I seem to not be able to find as easily. lastly, we swung by a nearby Goodland formation spot in northwest Tarrant county, with the usual broken oxytropidoceras ammos, plentiful heteraster and hemiaster echinoids, and a few nice gastropods and one perfect clam. I am including a nice big Goodland formation bivalve fossil I found a few days ago, just to show it off and keep it in the same category. We are expecting a lot of rain this week, so I’ll be resting my back and planning my next targets! -
these ammonites are carved?
joaoarguello3 posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello everyone, I have a question that only you can clarify. Recently I was looking at ammonites on various online sales sites, and I was looking at several to buy soon, but several Mantelliceras appeared that seemed to have carved their center; is this really so or not? I leave two photos of two different cases, but it seemed to me that most Mantelliceras in online sales are carved in their central part. I'm just starting out in this collection and I want to learn how to identify these cases before I start acquiring more fossils and not make mistakes. I clarify that I have no interest in the published pieces, they only call my attention and I just want to clarify my doubts. Thank you -
30-03-2019 cretaceous fieldtrip in Northern France
Manticocerasman posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
This saturday the tides were ideal for a whole day of prospection at the foot of the chalk cliffs near Calais. We got there early in the morning when the water was going away from the cliffs. At the parking we were greeted by a veteran collector from this location, he took us along to the northern part of the site in search of big Turonian ammonites. A first for us since we've only collected more to the south in the cenomanian deposits. With his help we did find a couple of ammonites including a big specimen. around 1pm after lunch we parted ways and we went to the southern part of the site in search of cenomanian fossils, most of the beach was covered in sand, making it harder to find some decent boulders on the beach to break open. but the usual Schloenbachia and Mantelliceras ammonites did show up. we ended the day with dinner in a local tavern before heading back home whit a new load of fossils to clean and prepp. A Lewisceras Ammonite: A large Ammonite, I still have to prepp and Id it propperly: the extraction of the large ammonite: A nice find from Natalie: under the sand on the beach Albian deposits are present, but not visible, from time to time som fossils from those banks are washed out deeper in the sea and washed ashore. She found a nice Hoplites ammonite lying around on the beach: more pictures of the area: Schloenbachia varians: Mantelliceras specimens in situ: part of the fossils that made it back home: Pictures of prepped specimens will follow later- 16 replies

new cenomanian ammonite prepps and restauration
Manticocerasman posted a topic in Fossil Preparation
on the last fieldtrip from this saturday I got a new batch of ammonites to prepp: the first one was realy easy to prepp, it was a small but well preserved Schloenbachia varians. next up is a Mantelliceras, I broke it in 3 pieces when extracting it from the chalk. I let the specimen dry at home and glued the pieces back together, I then prepped the specimen. After this step I grinded the some matrix residue left from the matrix and mixed it with a little bit of water and PVA glue, I used this mixture to fill and restaur the gaps in the ammonite. once dry I gave the ammonite a Paraloid B72 treatment for consolidation. I'm very pleased with the results- 5 replies
