1st Trip to Maryland For Shark Teeth and Would Appreciate Insights
AlwaysISOSharkTeeth412 posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
Hi everyone! I’m a novice shark tooth enthusiast who lives in western Pa. I’m taking a day trip to the Calvert Cliffs area this coming Sunday for the first time to search for shark teeth. Based on my cursory research aka google, I was thinking to try Matoaka cabins, but I wanted to see what the member of this forum think would be the best place to go to given my non-resident status. Any tips on the area would be GREATLY appreciated!!- 5 replies

Hi Again! for Easter this year I decided to go to the Calvert cliffs for some Easter egg fossil hunting. it was a lovely day out got to talk with some nice folks. I wanted to share some of my finds and my IDs of them to check if I got them right before I put labels on them in my collection. 1) Stingray teeth, most likely eagle ray, although the grayish one looks to me like a duck billed ray. 2) Mako Shark Isurus hastalis upper 3) Hemipristis Serra upper 4) Extinct tiger shark Physogaleus contortus 5) Extinct tiger shark Galeocerdo (I think the one below is a lower) 6) Crab claws ( is there any resources on specific crabs, some of these don't look like they belong to the same species) 7) Turritella plebia 8) Scallop shell (Chesapectean?) 9) Fish jawbone fragment (looks like sockets on the top) 10) Bone shard (there seems to be two divets below)

Hello all! On Sunday, I realized that Monday would be an amazing day to go shark tooth hunting so I took the chance and went. I arrived at Bayfront park at 8 am and did not find anything significant. I found small teeth, some petrified wood, and a broken shark vertebrae. After realizing that I was not going to find anything too impressive, I drove to Matoaka and encountered the same luck. I asked around and supposedly everyone I met was finding only small teeth as well. The best finds of the day were an angel shark tooth and a fairly intact ecphora. - Timmy

We took a trip down to the Matoaka Cabins in St. Leonard Maryland Saturday. I knew we weren't going to be making low tide in the morning or late in the evening, so we were there pretty much at high tide. The boys had fun playing in the sand and finding a few fossils. Our 2.5 year old actually found the first, he picked it up and asked if he found a fossil. We hung around for almost 4 hours before we headed pack home and beat the evening storms. Our 8 year old was thrilled to find fragments of ecphoras, chesapectans and ray dental plates. I found a few pieces of coral, a couple shark teeth, a possible fish vertebrae, and 4 mysterious bits that if I were to guess I would say 2 fish coprolites possibly and then the other 2 are maybe turtle or maybe croc scutes? The ruler in the pics is cm...because imperial is a pain.

I decided to just make one post about my December finds. After going through the pictures I can see now that it seems easier to post after each hunt.
