Along the Banks of the N. Saskatchewan River, Alberta
JustPlainPetrified posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
My buddy and I finally found the perfect day to end our fossil hunting year. The North Saskatchewan River can be notoriously high with uncooperative banks for most months of the year. We were looking for a broken shale/clay exposure along the banks at a place below Fort George and Buckingham House, a historic site of rivaling fur trading companies. Information dating back 60 years indicated that marine fossils (ammonites) had been found along these banks. We, of course, were interested as this is considerably closer to our home base than our other fossil hunting haunts. So, the road access proved to be dry and took us to within 50 yards of the river. A view downstream got the adrenaline going as the bank was just as described. The following photos will guide you to our last location of the year. It didn't prove to be all glory. We found a number of broken baculites and the water along the bank was sparkling with baculites shell pieces, but only one small ammonite showed itself to us. We spent a good three hours along this bank and it has promise of more treasures on our next trip. Eagle Cliff _ Elk Point Historical Society.html
