Stromatoporoidea Alpena, MI Rockport Quarry Limestone Middle Devonian -
Found in Muskogee, Ok near the Arkansas river. I originally thought this was just a piece of rhyolite the pink popping through the light gray caught my eye. Thinking its a rock we cut it ooen. Thats when I noticed some patterns and vivid colors and decided to remove the matrix which was pretty fragile. This is what I have uncovered so far. I am thinking this is a type of sponge either a Solenopora or a Stromatoporoidea. And thank you for any help.

Lately, I have been enjoying @Wrangellian's Show us your stromatolites. It made me think about some of my finds. I will post just 2 of them for the purpose of figuring out if they are stromatolites or stromatophoroid sponges. These were collected over the last month. The first came from the upper Ordovician of NE Iowa.I can NOT tell the difference!!!! It can be frustrating. The second ones, which I am pretty sure are stromatoporoids, came from the Devonian, Solon member or just above it, of central Iowa.

Silurian (?) erratic boulder from Poland. Underside (?) of a stromatoporoid. Is it just my imagination or was it growing on trilobite cranidium? I can even spot impressions of eyes/eyestalks...
