Please help with some clues

Hello,

 

I found this inside a loose chalk boulder on the Eastbourne shore. Based on the colour of the chalk it appeared to be from the upper cliff levels, perhaps cretaceous levels.

Welcome to the forum!

It's a marcasite nodule (at least that's what they're usually called from the Chalk, but it may actually be pyrite).They have a radiating needle crystal structure inside.

They're very useful to light fire and are still in use for that. Do you remember the smell of a match ?
