Diplotomodon
Amethyst is technically quartz, so here goes... (this pic may not be of the best quality) This is a very nice specimen I picked up from Rutgers. It's about 3 inches long and 1.5 inches long (at the highest point). What a wonderful menagerie! Who would believe that such as register lay buried in the strata? To open the leaves, to unroll the papyrus, has been an intensely interesting though difficult work, having all the excitement and marvelous development of a romance. And yet the volume is only partly read. Many a new page I fancy will yet be opened. -- Edward Hitchcock, 1858 Formerly known on the forum as Crimsonraptor @Diplotomodon on Twitter

sue in ohio
I had my first Herkimer hunt a couple weeks ago, I've banged on rocks all over NY but dang that Dolomite limestone is some tough stuff to deal with. Besides coming home with some very sore muscles(my biceps and triceps are definately alot buffer now after swinging a 8# & 10# sledge for 3 solid days )and plenty of blisters...I found some pretty Herks!! These are the tiny ones..1/4" and less The medium sized ones..3/4" and less The largest pieces..the biggest one is just a little over 1-1/4" long large chunks speckled with Herks, pic #3 is actually a triplet, two smaller Herks twinned off the sides of the center Herk, center stone 1" and side stones about 1/8"..my favorite piece other shots of the better Herks of the bunch and my bucket full of smaller chunks with more Herks
Coco
Hi, Interesting post, Sue. I often read the name "herkimer quartz", but in a time, on Eb-y a salesman called them "herkimer diamond". He had to be grumbled because now he speaks about quartz. 30 years ago, I found little "quartz diamond" which looked like those almost, in the North of Spain. They contained small inclusion of oil which reacted with an ultraviolet lamp. Did you try to look at them with this kind of lamp ? It would be cool to have a beautiful surprise ! Scylla
Some Herkimer diamonds (yes they are quartz crystals, usually double terminated) are known to flouresce, but none of mine do
Shawn71
I lived on a farm near Herkimer for awhile....here's a couple of the nicer ones I harvested, including a couple with incredible marcasite inclusions! Haven't seen anything like them before or after I found them. www.EarthFragments.com

Wrangellian
Wow, Shawn, those are some nice ones to have found yourself. You live in a good area. All of you, really. I have found small ones on my local fossil hill but I'm ashamed to post a pic now..
Shawn71
No need to be ashamed I'd love to see 'em....Within the next year I plan on buying a few acres in a location near Herkimer most don't even know crystals are....clearly outside of the red in this map Hope it works out, the mountain contains massive smokey skeletals! Shawn71
Well then post some pics here when you find them! I will take photos of my little ones if I can find them and some black paper or suchlike to put them on. I'll post a pic of a nice one my friend got from there next time I go to NY Here's a couple more, as well as a calcite crystal with marcasite inclusions that came out of a herk pocket!....I just posted a bunch of these on my webpage, too www.EarthFragments.com
Wrangellian
Nice ones. It's odd how perfect they are on the outside compared to the inside. I can't find my little jar full, but I think I know where I put that rock with qtz xls on it from the same place, I'll try a pic of it but not today, there has been no good sunlight here to take pics lately, but maybe sometime... Shawn71
Not herks, but these clusters are pretty nice. I collected these today not too far from Saint Clair(actually closer to Hazleton). They still need to be cleaned up a bit. Wrangellian
Nice ones again, Shawn.. but can you adjust the color a bit or try sunlight? What would you do to clean these? They look pretty clean to me, unless you mean chipping out some of the broken bits to expose more of the complete xls. You want to talk cleaning, I've got a qtz xl chunk all stained with rust, and it's really stuck on - CLR doesnt have any effect!

I hit a super huge pocket there been diggin' it out the last month it's a cave now hehe Have hundreds like those above. Try Iron Out powder(Lowes or Walmart has it) and soak it in warm water overnight...repeat again if still stained. My friends use a crock pot to keep it warm. Some use Oxylic(sp?) or Muriatic acid. I would not recommend muriatic , it can etch the xtals. Edited March 26, 2012 by Shawn71 www.EarthFragments.com
Wrangellian
Iron Out.. comes in a powder... OK, thanks, will try if I can find it. I haven't exhausted all my possibilities yet, but figured if the CLR didn't do it (certainly didn't work like the commercial shows) then what would? I think I tried Oxalic once but maybe not enough. Today I found one of my small containers of my local 'Herkimers' but not the full one, just a few in it, even the full one is certainly not near as many as you find, but can try a pic/scan anyway. stay tuned... EDIT: Here's a quick scan (not ideal, they look much better in person). Largest one is about 14mm. Shawn71
If they're stained bad, use a crock pot on warm. I soak outside even though they say you can put iron out in dishwasher, coffeemaker, etc. www.EarthFragments.com
mikeymig
Here are just a few of my HERKS. Love collecting and camping there every year with my little girl. Shawn71
Where do you go? Ace of Diamonds or Herkimer Diamond Mine? Those don't look like Crystal Grove unless you moved a phenominal amount of rock hehe www.EarthFragments.com
mikeymig
We camp at the KOA and collect at the Ace of Diamonds. Some of our best finds were made in West Canada Creek near our camp. You might think this is funny but when Im there I want to find calcite more then Herks. What can say, I like calcite. Many times I've wondered how much there is to know. led zeppelin
