Nice to see a forum like this here.

Just moved here last Sept, from CT. Spent most of my life collecting dinosaur Tracks and fossil fish in CT. and MA. Just getting into Florida vertebrate fossils and loving it. Have been snorkeling and screening in the alifia and peace river so far and eating it up. Looking for a few friends who like to do the same near me. STILL waiting on my permit...........anyone know how long they take to process?

I'm including a picture of a 70,000 year old Cave Bear I resored and articulated for Natures Art in CT.post-5632-0-83652800-1304786798_thumb.jpg

I havn't yet. I hear the artifacts are off limits down here. I WOULD however be interested in the agatized oysters and other chippable rock which I hear tghe Alafi has its share of since I am also a flint knapper.

Welcome from your former state! :)

Can you show us some of your collection?

I'm sure others would like to see as well. ;)

Welcome, again!

Hi Tim,

There isn't a collection to show anymore. I went through a divorce a few years back and am starting all over down here from scratch! How well I remember the Shuttle Meadow formation. I have collected and prepared many many Semionotus, Redfieldious, Ptycolepis specimens from several localities in it. I've even prepared one complete Dipleurus which was collected by Nick McDonald and now resides on permanent display at the Rocky Hill Dinosaur Museum.

As you know....There isn't much for vertebrate collecting up there. Down here I'm like a kid in a candy store.

Nothing serious yet but it sure nice to get out and find stuff almost everywhere. I enjoy the identification more than anything. There is so much down here that I will be fore ever stumped on most of it.

John,

Wow! I absolutely love that Diplurus ! First rate job on that one!

Would you be willing to give some advice on prepping?

Having a horrendous time with the primitive tools I have.

The shale can be so hard and unyielding, as you know.

Hi,

Almost anything from the shuttle meadow formation will airdent (mini sandblaster) with plain sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) The tougher rock may require a little powdered dolomite mixed in. The fish from the Berlin formation I can only acid prep with a crazy technique.

Tim,

I had an SS White Air abrassion unit at my Exwifes in Granby, CT. Ive been meaning to restore. It sat in cellar and got dirty and rusted a bit. I paid $5,000.00 for it once. Would sell it cheap...$300 if she hasn't already. :) I know SS White still sells all the fitting, Tubes etc.

John,

That is incredibly generous of you,! I thank you for that offer.

Unfortunately, even at that fantastic price, it is beyond my means.

I have two teenagers eating me out of house and home! And the $4.27 per gallon gas isn't making things any easier, either.

I actually already have a compressor and a cheap air eraser, and am working on making a blast cabinet out of a rubbermaid container.

Need a few more pieces, and the whole setup is gonna come in at under a hundred dollars.

Thank you again, John, for the truly generous offer. I really do appreciate that, and the advice.

I will post the results when I am up and running with my home made system.

Best of luck to you in your new location with your fossil hunting!

Best regards,

My Florida fossil permits have taken between 1 and 3 weeks, from when I sent in the form. Good luck and happy hunting.

Ah a new Floridian :P I don't expect you'll move back after enjoying life in the sunshine state. If you ever want to try a dive trip come on up to high springs area and we'll set something up. I just got my gills workin again yesterday.
