Bullsnake
It's with great pleasure that I had the opportunity to do some hunting today (9/9/12) with Nando and his wife Diana. So I scouted a couple of roadcuts yesterday to make sure they were producing, and at the last minute contacted grokfish about getting in the quarry where he, Kehbe, Missourian, and I have hunted, since he has the contact for access. He (grokfish) really came through, but unfortunately couldn't make it himself. Nando, Diana, and I spent a couple of hours there, first in the lower Wea shale member of the Cherryvale fm. They found a few shark tooth fragments, horn coral, and brachiopods. Diana examining the Wea: Well, Nando forgot his camera in the truck and had to make the long walk back to get it. I kind of thought it was taking a little longer than it should, but he eventually came strolling back. I was wondering if he maybe took a wrong road, as the quarry is huge. Apparently, what happened was, he was looking for his knee pad, and encountered KC's finest, who was wondering what was going on. After explaining what he was doing, and the officer making sure everything was legal, he went on his way. Nando said he was very nice about it, but I still kind of feel bad that it happened . Nando on the lam: We went to the bottom of the quarry and split some shale (Stark shale), but really didn't find anything. We probably should have hit the limestone harder, especially the Winterset, but there is so much ground to cover there, we decided to get a bite to eat and hit a little more localized spot. After lunch, we trekked over to the Kansas side (since they were westbound anyway), and hit one of my favorite roadcuts, Lansing group-Plattsburg/Vilas shale fm.. We didn't spend a whole lot of time there, but some nice brachs, and a pygidium were found. Nando and Diana looking for something I spotted: Diana searching the shale below: Can you find Nando?: There he is!: I didn't take any fossil photos (SORRY!), as my camera just doesn't do well when I can't see the screen for the sunlight, especially trying to get closeups. Hopefully if they get time, and want to, they will post their photos. I am happy that they enjoyed themselves, as I know I did, hearing their stories and sharing their knowledge. It's really an awesome feeling getting to know the people I've met on the forum, and sharing in the fascination of the paleo-past! And, not to forget their kindness and generosity, they gifted some fantastic Miocene/Pliocene fossil seashells from N. Carolina. I hope next time we can plan a little more and my other friends can join also. Before bidding farewell: Thank you, and safe travels! mzkleen
Sounds like you had a great day!! It's always nice to be out with other hunters, and especially if they are on the Forum here. A few months back I met hitechmastr and his wife Nancy at St. Clair's looking for fern fossils. We're all kindred spirits.

Nandomas
Steve & Matt thanks again for the opportunity to fossil hunting Pennsylvanian in Kansas. We really had a great day. The quarry was awesome and... the police guy I met in the parking lot, while I was digging in my truck in a horizontal position, half into the camper shell and half out of the pick-up, was so kind to let me back to the quarry The weather was perfect, the company great. The only thing we missed was the opportunity to meet in person Matt and the other Missourian forum members. We had a great time also on the road cuts, the trilo pygidium hunt was very funny. Here some pics Nando Erosion... will be my epitaph! http://www.paleonature.org/ https://fossilnews.org/
