Hi Elliot, Brent brought up a good point about common names. In English-speaking countries we learned dog before we learned its scientific name (if we learned it at all) but that's because it is a familiar animal, one we are likely to see in the neighborhood, while traveling, or on television. We can become familiar with a great diversity of animals living across our planet, but even today, there are animals that are known by their scientific name such as the Manta (ray) and the Mobula (ray).
