New Members Chuckd124 Posted April 18, 2020 New Members Share Posted April 18, 2020 Hi everyone, I was hoping someone could identify this or tell me if its something interesting. I was digging a bush out of my yard and hit it with a shovel, sounded much different than a rock so I washed it off. It was found in clay but this soil/ clay mix was brought in by a truck from somewhere after the house was built to level the backyard. I thought it was a very unusual piece to be found in the yard. Any ideas? Let me know if any other pictures would help. Thanks Chuck

Darktooth
Well it definitely looks like the side view of a mastodon tooth in the first pic. The root and part of the enamel on the crown. What is throwing me off is pic #2 which should show the chewing surface of the tooth, which in this case is smooth, as if it has really been worn down. Mastodon and mammoth remains both have been found in New Jersey. 2 I like Trilo-butts and I cannot lie.
caldigger
Yes, a very senile ( old ) Mastodon. What luck finding such a thing in your own yard.
Tidgy's Dad
I agree with Dave and Doren, I think this is a very worn mastodon tooth, poor old thing must have been a good age. Great find. 1 Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.
RuMert
Yep, no 'mastos' on the surface strangely. Mammoth is even more doubtful, never seen such smooth surface. Maybe some other big mammal? My sites & reports

Actually, this size and the fact that it only has 3 humps makes this a worn out tooth from a younger mastodon. I believe mastodon went through like 6 sets of teeth, someone out there should know more than me, but I'm guessing maybe an m1? Which would be 4th of the 6? The roots suggest that the tooth had not been shed, so the animal may have died with this tooth in place. Great find! I wish I had your backyard! GeschWhat
Cool tooth! I wish I could find stuff like that in my yard. I'm not a tooth person, but are you all sure it's not a woolly rhino tooth? As others have indicated, Mastodonts have multiple sets of teeth that go thru their jaws like on a conveyor belt. wear down one ... here comes another Here is a Mastodont juvenile highly worn tooth... 3 The White Queen ".... in her youth she could believe "six impossible things before breakfast"
