New Members Cyndi Posted September 10, 2020 New Members Share Posted September 10, 2020 Found out I had fossils down the street from my house and did some searching for a variety of plant fossils. This was found in a road cut along the Ohio river near Ambridge/Aliquippa, PA and the fossil layer is the Mahoning Shale. Most of what we found were tree ferns, calamites and lycopods. We had some great success and it was great to find these right down the street! Most were easy to ID with help from the Fossil Guy site. But we can't find any info on the attached. Any ideas are welcome!
Top Trilo
It looks a lot like a bryozoan. “If fossils are not "boggling" your mind then you are simply not doing it right” -Ken (digit) "No fossil is garbage, it´s just not completely preserved” -Franz (FranzBernhard) "With hammer in hand, the open horizon of time, and dear friends by my side, what can we not accomplish together?" -Kane (Kane) "We are in a way conquering time, reuniting members of a long lost family" -Quincy (Opabinia Blues) "I loved reading the trip reports, I loved the sharing, I loved the educational aspect, I loved the humor. It looks more like a partial Lacoea cone, to me. Similar items found in North-East Ohio. Top Trilo
Oh you're probably right fossildude19. I thought it was odd that a bryozoan would be with ferns. After looking at Lacoea I agree with you. New Members Cyndi Posted September 10, 2020 Author New Members Share Posted September 10, 2020 It definitely looks plant or cone like, as I can see the scales along the ribs of fossil. Definitely the same shape as the bryozoans, but different texture. I can't find much info on Lacoea aside from what's on this forum, but the photos that you posted from NE Ohio are very similar. Seems like this may be a rare find or even a rare plant since there's not much info on it via the web. Sure hope I don't have to break out the books and do this the old fashioned way! I also have a friend at the Carnegie museum that may be able to assist in a confirmation.
