Hello! I'm a Central Florida native, but have been out of town for the last decade.  I'm looking to get into fossil hunting in the greater Tampa area.  Anything from riverbank sifting to offshore diving interests me.  Any tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to the Forum from Bradenton, FL - about 50 miles south of your new home.

Being originally from central Florida I have to assume you know your way to the Peace River.  I think it is the most fossil rich place in Florida!  For a wide variety of possible fossil finds head to the river once the water level drops and dig into any gravelly areas you locate.  Don't forget to get your fossil hunting permit from the University of Florida so you can keep all those great finds.  Only thing you can keep without the permit are sharks teeth.

Right now the river is too deep and running to fast for any successful hunting.  Another couple of weeks and the hunting season should be underway.  Good Luck!

Welcome from Illinois.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!

Thanks for the info, Jim.  I hope to hit up the Peace River as soon as the levels drop.  These late-season storms certainly aren't helping.  On the plus side, I was able to get a decent haul of small sharks teeth near Venice yesterday.
