kerrimarie805
It's been a long time since I've done this, and a few weeks since renewing my membership here, but I've read the specs again and I think I'm ready to start posting the pieces that have brought me back to you experts here in this forum. I was in Pennsylvania when I joined the forum the first time. I am now in western Nebraska and have become more rockhound more than mudlark simply by the nature of what the earth brings up. Most of the time I am satisfied with my own identification or don't need one to be happy with a piece. I have recently found a couple of things that baffle me. I've been on the lookout for petrified wood, it's rather everywhere out here, and picked up the piece I'm posting here and two more I'll post separately. My guess is that they are likely petrified wood. However, they look like they could be something else that I dare not speak aloud lest I get my hopes up. If any of the three are this fossil of which I dare not speak, this ID post will tell me and I can be surprised and delighted. So, petrified wood or something else? Rockwood
The look is of petrified wood. The technical terminology of it could be off. Some kind of wood fossil I think though.
kerrimarie805
@FranzBernhard @FossilDAWG @Fossildude19 @Harry Pristis I've called you all out by name because you've always been most helpful no matter what nonsense I bring to the forum. If you saw this (and the next) post and passed because "It's a rock, " please carry on about your day and don't mind me. However, if any of you can offer any thoughts as to this (these) being either pet wood or bone, please do spill. This piece was found on the shore of a lake where the water has gone down significantly in the last 3 weeks, this was under water probably it's whole life. I also have to say that this particular lake is not terribly far from the area in eastern Wyoming in which the conditions were just right to produce bone jasper. To my overzealous eye, this piece looks like it could be fossilized bone but it also resembles a chunk of a small tree branch so I am stumped. Ha! So, fellas, tell me what's what and we can move on to seeing the pieces I've gathered since moving back to Nebraska that I am fairly certain are actually fossils! Fossildude19
It's not bone, but I cannot rule out petrified wood. I don't collect it, so I don't know, but it looks more like jasper or agate to me.
