JSERTL
Okay I don't even know what to say or think about this one. I've had it for some time & you can see why I kept it. It's just weird, it looks like whatever those "beans" are fell from enough of a height to make an indent in the ground below. I also had the thought that this was once part of a wall & these "beans" were dust particles on a bead of water that petrified in the bottom of the indent. The problem with that is the smaller one contradicts that idea unless the wall shifted reorienting this piece. Then on the other side it gets even more interesting. Now your looking at a hole with some kind of round object lodged in the bottom of it. Obviously this isn't the case but it looks like a "BB" shot into some mud. The "BB" has evenly spaced lines wrapping around it which you can see in the close-up picture. It's always fun to speculate about stuff like this but I'd really like to understand what I'm looking at here & how it happened. Thanks in advance.
JSERTL
Sorry once again, I found this in Iron County Missouri & the dimensions of the whole rock are 4"x4". As a reference the big "Bean" is 1/2" long & 1/8" thick.
Fossildude19
The "beans" did not fall and make the imprints. This is a water worn piece of chert. The "beans" could be mineral inclusions (or fossils) that have been eroded down to their current shape. The outer stone was a different mineral composition, and therefore harder and less easily worn away than the inclusions. Research Geologic Potholes. Water can wear holes in rocks pretty easily with the aid of other stones/sand/material. 2 2 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." JSERTL
Okay then what about the other side water didn't drill that hole
JSERTL
The "BB" lodged in the bottom of that hole is a perfect sphere (at least from what's visible) & has evenly spaced perpendicular lines. What could that be?
ynot
A fossil was there then it decomposed and left the void. Because the presence of the fossil makes the rock "softer" or "weaker" it leaves a hole on the larger body of rock. When a rock is in a stream all sides are exposed to erosions forces. The "bean" was made by the shape of the fossil.
