New Members AngGwai Posted September 7, 2021 New Members Share Posted September 7, 2021 I have this jawbone that is found i Denmark. The teeth shows that it is a very young animal, because there are very little wear. There is the possibility that it could be one of several missing young wolves but I do not have the experience to see the difference between wolf and dog. I hope some of you might have the ability to identify the jawbone Thank you very much. The measurements are in centimeters.
Rockwood
This promises to be difficult. Dogs are really just wolves to begin with.
Fossildude19
I think modern domestic dog is most likely. I would guess that this is medium-to-large mustelid based only on elimination. I have no other ideas. JohnJ
(I cannot believe I am writing this...) @AngGwai Thank you for the photos with measurements. Fossildude19
Seal looks like a pretty good match: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jrochester/14181571410 3 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." New Members AngGwai Posted September 8, 2021 Author New Members Share Posted September 8, 2021 We have fox, marten, pine marten, badger, grey seal, harbor seal, wolf and some smaller carnivores. I have to say that the photo of the harbor seal looks very much like the jawbone I have. The bone was not found far from the sea so it could have been an opputunistic fox who has taken the head of a seal with it into the dunes. I have attached some extra photos without the tape measure The dots on the paper are 0,5 cm apart. Thank you very much for your help
ClearLake
The Common Seal (also known as Harbour Seal) Phoca vitulina looks like a pretty reasonable match based on the number of cusps on the teeth. Good call by some of the previous responders and a very nice find by @AngGwai
