Red Rocks from Jacksonville, TX - Any ideas of contents?

Recommended Posts

These pieces of "red" rock (I don't know the geologic terminology yet, sorry), have some unique features. Hopefully someone can help identify one, two, more, or all of them for me, if they are anything. If they are nothing, I'd like to know that also. These came from Jacksonville, Texas (south of Tyler, TX) in east Texas.

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, none of your guesses will apply.  The area is full of the bizarre rocks in the Eocene strata of Texas.  Use this pocket Geology guide to help you narrow the formation; then, study up on the fossils documented in the formation.

I agree with John. All are sedimentary rocks. Ironstone and sandstone with mineral veins and inclusions which make for interesting shapes which can stimulate the inexperienced imagination.

Thanks John. I appreciate the input. I put the geology guide on my phone for reference. I'm definitely a beginner at the rock layer terminology.

I guess I don't need to keep any of these.

If you have room outdoors, they can be a decorative accent.  It's interesting to look at early finds when you have gained some experience later on.  ;)

I have a nice ever-growing pile of wanna-bees next to my garage.  Never leave anything behind that you are not sure about...unless it is stupidly big.  But then again that's what cameras are for.  Personally I love those colors and in my early days I certainly would have picked them up as well.

Keep 'em coming...
