Mioplosus WIP in some very hard sediment

Yup. That has the look of the 18" layer which provides some really nice preservation but is harder matrix than encountered in the split-fish layer. Slow and steady wins the day. ;)

Cheers.

This stuff is hard even for the 18" layer. Fish is encased in a layer of concrete.

You sure do know how to take some good pictures.  Looks like a nice fish, but wondering about the lower jaw?

Thanks! Just cell snaps.

I was also wondering about the jaw. Figure it will show up as I prep more of that area.

Any idea what this bone is? It's protruding off from behind the skull. Guessing shifted from elsewhere, don't know my bony fish bones well. Lots of scales all over.

Starting to think I'm looking down at the top of the skull?

Cheers

David

What does WIP stand for?

I think, "work in progress".

The bone looks like it could be a sub-operculum, preoperculum, or a cleithrum, probably disarticulated from the right hand side of the skull.
