Machairodus Horribilis sabertooth cat skull

Recommended Posts

Hi this is posted online.  I was hoping to get input on its authenticity.  How can you tell new material and composite for older material? Stated it is from Hippareon layer Gansu province

Would this be considered a good better or best specimen? Are the sabers all original?

Thanks for the help!

On a sperate note there are a few on a local auction house that come from China, Taiwan and Korea.  Are these commonly fakes?

always hard to decide..., most of the skulls are done. You need to have close pics of the matrix between upper and lower jaw, uv-pics of the teeth and the bones. And, good pics in total.

We have two skulls like this, one is perfect and great, the other one was really well done, but was from two different animals. On not great pics both looked "similar", so, check

and, about the auction houses, some of the skulls are fantastic, some are o.k., some are..., depends. Everything on the market from full plaster up to 99% perfect

looks like some teeth have been replaced, might be lower jaw is a mix of two

Otherwise, first view says to me, might be a good one

This certainly was not dug up this way.  Looks like lots of work has been done.  Lower jaw looks added and all the front teeth have been added along with some other help in places.  Looks like real bone and teeth though.  To me that is.

  • 2 weeks later...

Front upper and lower teeth look reasserted , looks off. There is definitely some work done to it

skull looks real and big fangs also, but its hard to see what has been done to it. back teeth could also be re inserted . I would not trust it based on these photos.

Very risky to purchase a specimens like this without hand examination.  Photo are not adequate to say much and just raise red flags without answers.  A UV light is need to see if any resto has been done to the Canine teeth.
