ID requested: various Brachiopods from Eifel region in Germany (Devonian)

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a collection from a retired fossil collector.
Including in this collection was a box with Brachiopods from the Eifel region.
Unfortunately it is harder than expected to ID them all.

So here is the a batch of photo's of Brachiopods which are the most represented species from the collection.

Group 1) I believe all these to be Xystostrophia umbracula

Group 2) Similar to group 1 in form and shape but the striations or ornamentation (or whatever the lines brachiopods have are called) are different from group 1 which makes me believe these might belong to a different species or genus.

And lastly group 3: A very distinct group due to their oddly shaped lid form.

Hypothyridina cuboides seems to be matching

Anyone trying to do a thorough job of determining German Devonian brachiopoda will come up against the enormous stranglehold the Senckenberg Institute has on brach literature (Think  e.g. Struve*****). Havlicek,Solle*,Paeckelmann**: all relevant literature from the period 1923-1996:AWOL

*Geol.Jahrb. ** Abh.Preuss.etc ( an about 90 years old(!!!!) paywall)

edit: all of the above is why I give Central European brach determinations a wide berth

*****e.g.:

STRUVE, W. (1992): Neues zur Stratigraphie und Fauna des rhenotypen Mittel-Devon. - Senckenbergiana lethaea, 71 (5/6):
503-624, 6 Tab.; Frankfurt am Main.

species list from that one paywalled,it seems

I'm pretty sure I know what all these species are, but can I just confirm that we only know that these are from the Eifel region and we don't know for sure that there are Eifelian; they may be Givetian, for example?

It might not be such a bad idea to contact Ulrich Jansen, if you haven't already done so.

Haha thanks, there were a lot more brachiopod in the box as well, these are just the first batch I photographed :)

But yeah, they are found in the Devonian of the Eifel region but whether they are Eifelian, Givetian, Emsian or from other stage I do not know.
The person from who I bought was an avid fossil hunter but did not really catalogue his finds well. They are from all over the Eifel region for sure, but individual locations were not recorded by this gentleman.

BTW,Zig: you could have done a lot worse, nice specimens

That for sure, got very nice fossils from this person which I am very happy with.
These are only a small part from the Eifel devonian brachiopods, lots more I have not yet photographed as well as some Spiriferids.

But also a lot of Trilobites from Gerolstein in Germany and from Vireux in France. containers full of Jurassic brachiopods from Luc-Sur-Mer, France and a container with Belemnites from multiple locations.

Xystostrophia is an orthotetid and these are definitely atrypid, I think Desquamatia, possibly D. ( Independatrypa) zonata if they're actually Eifelian.

The next series of photos has more than the one species.

The first one that you are holding in your hand is your Xystostrophia umbraculum.

The second one you are holding is another Desquamatia.

And the last one I believe to be the orthid Schizophoria schnuri.

And I think you are right about the last ones; absolutely amazing specimens of the rhynchonellid Hypothyridina cuboides. Beautiful.
