SE Texas - Large bone fragment

I have a spot where there are thousands of rocks like these on the ground which, unfortunately, are covered in mud and algae. I found my Eremotherium occipital condyle here and every foramen was filled in with sand and it didn't have a recognizable shape, but it had an unusual shape and I kept it and was thrilled when I removed it all and saw what it was.

I found this Sunday... couldn't see any bone at all but the shape was interesting... plus it looked like a green cartoonish alien head which was amusing at the time.   Sandstone is everywhere and this thing was packed and it was hard to remove but I finally did today. The bone is very brittle.  It looks crushed on one side... cows do travel thru here. But I have found a camelid metatarsal here also that was extremely brittle in this same condition too so I think this is old.

What bone is this? The ball on top seems flat-ish. Is this a femur with a femur head?

The damage to it is as it was found.

@fossilus You are exactly right with a proximal humerus! Here are 2 images of a camelops hesternus proximal humerus... hadn't compared the measurements yet. Will check bison. Thanks!

Here is a bison humerus. I looked at several and I'm not sure if mine is bison

Size seems right for camelops off these measurements and appearance.

I know we don't have European cave lions here but I couldn't help but notice this slight similarity between my find and this labeled British cave lion femur that I saw online. Also, I know hand sizes differ and this shouldn't matter, but this also seemed similar in size across my hand and this online image. Could American Lion be a possibility? Was found in the same spot as my jaguar radius that I recently found.

Just food for thought.  A humerus had me... but this gave me pause.

Still researching but I appreciate any thoughts.Screenshot_20230802_221424_Google.thumb.jpg.d33900066caeda7a749a76f28c6bdb49.jpg

Dang man what’s inside the bone?   Looks like crystal or is just mud ?

looks like completely fossilized?

Maybe this is the crazy fanged creature that crushed the bone you found.

my 100 pound malemute/border collie fangs not even close. Who knows I’m up stream of you on the river.

@Callahan hey man! Just got out of the water myself found a few things some I'll post. That stuff inside is hard matrix...sand, clay, mud... probably some crystallization.  Ain't coming out so it's gotta stay. Probably keeping the shape of the bone too.  Yeah that skull has some huge canines.  I don't think think I've seen a complete coyote skull to compare but if it is coyote... with teeth like that... and those everywhere I live... man gotta keep an eye out.

You can have the creatures skull if you want.  I’ll trade whatever for it.  Cool rocks or something along those lines.

hey man check out the recent post of a old stirrup I found downtown weatherford tx creek   Couple day ago.

encrusted as heck seems like something someone wouldn’t just throw away.  Prob has tragic story behind it.  Some of the last Comanche settler kills were all around this area.  Who knows could be connected to the dudes hip bone I found on same creeks stirrup.

maybe you being a rancher and around tack will have any idea of age etc.

message me separately or post

I think that skull is an Opossums, to many teeth for a coyote.

I don't really see anything diagnostic, but here's an "American Lion" museum cast I restored a while back.IMG_8645.thumb.jpeg.6b976da2c6380054827e23a7eadd6223.jpegIMG_8643.thumb.jpeg.7ac0a9d9259456f8a236a02a03834bfb.jpegIMG_8644.thumb.jpeg.7e12332f2cd7cf5efe086f85cee355ee.jpeg

@LabRatKing

Yeah, I hate that a lot of what I find is pretty mangled. Attempting to ID it and the research involved gives me joy because I actually have to work hard scanning thru images to compare; but, I learn new things in the process. Sometimes it seems harder than being out in the field.

I would LOVE to find any Panthera atrox anything. @Lorne Ledger has found some in a nearby waterway... which means it's possible. I have the drive to get out there so I hope to make that dream a reality. That's a really nice museum piece!
