I found these laying on the ground when I was out horn hunting. Any ideas on what they are?

I have looked up stalagmites stalactites but they don't have the same outer layer or rings like these do. I literally found them laying on the ground in the middle of a field

I've no idea what these things are, but I'm getting sort of a man made vibe from them. I've never seen a geological formation quite like this, but on the other hand, nature is full of surprises.

Tricky!

Close-up pics of the ends could help. They appear to be wrinkeld.

Does the material fizz in HCl (hydrochloric acit = muriatic acid)?

If they were found in a field, it seems almost certain that there had to be a human element involved. The texture is more like stalactites that form as a result of minerals leaching from concrete. The walls of a leaky foundation is where I've seen them. My samples probably are still somewhere in the workshop where I used to work though.

This would explain the flattend end of one of those.

They look like Fulgurite, especially if it was found in a field.

Aren´t they a little bit too straight, too smooth and too bright (last for a fiel find)?

Reminds me of wasp nest or hornet nest type paper layering. We have mud dobber wasp that build tubes like these.

The field was at the foot of a mountain with no houses or dwellings anywhere around it. They definitely were out of place was my thought. I have spent most of my life in the mountains and have never seen anything like these

How big are they? I can imagine a deer hunter using them in place of actual antlers to make sounds that mimic a deer fight in order to lure in other deer.

I doubt these could be used by a deer hunter. Maybe someone was trying to rattle in a jackalope. :shakehead:

But seriously, maybe the geologic context would offer some help here. Is the area known for springs of any sort?

Like coins, pencils or hands, phones do not give a good measurement indication because they exist in several sizes! Please give the information in cm or inches, only valid and recognized references.

If you have nothing to measure, you can print the document that I provide in my signature !

We use actual antlers or plastic mimics.

Yes. I was just trying to figure out why someone might have these out in a field. Had they been bigger I bet they would at least as realistic as plastic. And if not, it would explain why they were left there.

This is exactly what it looks like. There used to be a glacier Lake here many many years ago and Yellowstone Park is just over 150 miles away. Could this be it?

It certainly tilts the odds that way.

Glad that you confirmed it,  I couldn't imagine what else it could be. :)
