Unidentified bone and tooth

Brevicollis

Recommended Posts

Hello , I have this two still unidentified pieces in my collection. A bone and a tooth. But from what ? The bone looks like If it came from a joint (flat , smooth area ). But I have no clue to which animal the tooth belongs to. Could it be that these pieces are from the pleistocene ?

I found them in Hejlsminde , Denmark in a cliff.

Thanks !

Welcome to TFF,

On your finds.  In Florida we have Giant Tortoise, which fought for mating rights with spurs called Osteoderms on their legs.

Your tooth is either modern cow or its Bison ancestor.  You show us the "back" side which faces the cheek,  Please show a picture of the front side, which faces the tongue and is opposite to the back side.

I think your tooth is an upper left molar (M1) .  You provided the chewing surface length of 26 mm but no photo contains chewing surface width.

Yes, The part marked in blue is called a Stylid,  and is indicative of Bovid (either Bison or modern cow. Bison would have much larger teeth that the one you have found.  Therefore it is modern cattle/cow..

Research Gate provides generally free scientific papers.  It is a resource I use frequently
