Real Carcharodontosaurus jaw ?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I saw this Carcharodontosaurus jaw on auction today and wondered If its real or fake. Carch jaws seem to be incredibly rare on the market, so I think that many of the ones you see are fake. But this one looks genuine to me. Can someone maybe identify, if its lower or upper jaw?

It was found in the Kemkem beds, morocco.

Thanks !

I have not a clue.  Only thing I can say is something seems slightly off on the positioning of the tooth when compared to the shape of the holes near it but I don't know anywhere near enough about these jaws to make an educated opinion. Could just be a part of the jaw that curves.

Example of the top piece of a jaw about a quarter way down this page.

Man do I wish that Troodon still would be in this Forum. He knew so much and could've helped here wonderfully. I dont know about the tooth, maybe it was not burried directly, so the flesh rotted away, and he became loose.

@Phos_01, @pachy-pleuro-whatnot-odon, and @LordTrilobite, do you have any ideas ?

Something tells me the tooth doesn't belong to that jaw. Looking at it again, the root of that tooth seems like itd be awfully small compared to the teeth that would have been near it.

To me, something feels off. Then again, I am no expert.

Unfortunately, I'm not well-versed with dinosaur material, so wouldn't be able to really advise here. However, I agree that the tooth appears added, as there seems to be a restoration-line, especially visible in the UV-light photograph. The alveoli also seem to wide for carcharodontid teeth, and a lot of crocodile material is found in the Kem Kem , which makes me question the identification of this piece as Carcharodontosaurus saharicus. I'd be interest in hearing what more knowledgeable members have to say...
